I love your writing style, Angela. My husband and I are finally experiencing a wonderful life – we downsize and decided only to get jobs we really loved. The result? More time, more joy and (strangest of all) more money.

Thank you, Diane! It was sweet (and flattering) of you to comment and share your own experiences.

I think one of the reasons that we have more money when we manage to downsize is that we aren’t spending quite so much of our money "escaping."

After all, if you love your life, you don’t need elaborate (and expensive) vacations to escape it. You don’t need to go "buy yourself something nice" because you are all stressed out from working all the time and you never seem to have time to do anything for YOU.

I’ll know more about the validity of my theory in the weeks to come. Right now, I’m just reveling and relaxing in my newfound "Ahhhhhh!" And hoping that other areas of my life become less complicated soon. I know simplicity is my answer… I have for many years…but the journey from where I was to where I want to be isn’t yet complete on that issue.

I do believe that the journey with a like-minded partner will be far easier, quicker and more enjoyable than my earlier travels solo.

Although tempting, this would cross my personal line between "helping" and "hacking." I’m not going to say that it didn’t cross my mind (especially the idea about printing to their network printers with a note saying "THIS is how secure your network is!")

But, I’ve decided to be a bit more proactive.

I contacted Michael Russer yesterday and pitched him an idea for a tech article on this topic instead of my regular monthly column on writing for ePowerNews. And, I’m considering contacting the local chamber and offering to give a presentation at one of their regular monthly meetings on the topic of security for wireless networks for small businesses.

This is beautiful. I can see how to apply word variations to my business. I didn’t quite understand what search engines want, now I do. Thanks.

I didn’t see the difference in the IE and Mozilla alt tag example you cited until I clicked on "View" and "Page Source."

Taking a baby step to the side of this topic, do most of your readers have Geeklog sites?

I’m confused about Geeklog’s index page. When I "View" "Page Source" on other Geeklog sites I see the how the metatags are placed on those sites. I cannot figure out how to get my metatag info onto my index page.

When I go to Geeklog site for info, I’m still confused. From what I read it appears that the static page on the home page is the same thing as the index page. That can’t be right.

I have figured out how to insert metatags onto a static page. Do search engines want metatags on all static pages or just the static page on the index page?

Do you have any additional words of (or links to) enlightenment on metatags for Geeklog index pages?

You are quite welcome, JJ. Thanks for the heads up on the difficulty with the alt tags, when I cut and pasted my article in, the <> symbols indicated that it actually WAS an alt tag and it hid the portion I was trying to demonstrate. Excellent catch on how to see the "back end" with view source, however.

My readers elect a variety of website formats. I just like Geeklog and often recommend a customized Geeklog solution for those clients who want more control in an easy to use package.

Getting leading meta information into a Geeklog site is not done through the standard interface, however, and must be done by your webmaster (unless you want to learn the guts of how the database is set up on your control panel and you are fairly proficient with HTML and/or PHP, depending on your set-up.)

Static pages can be assigned as index pages on the Geeklog system, but they can also be sub pages, your choice. I would not advise placing additional (duplicate) metas on your static pages.

Do a view source on your own page after doing this and you will see the duplication. Metas must be in the header portion of your site.

Now, should each page (not static page, but actual web page) contain custom metas to focus the keywords for the content on that particular page? — yes, if possible. Depending on the website tools you use this may or may not be possible. Check with your website administrator for more information on your particular situation.

Marketing has its own vocabulary (niche, branding, angle, hook) and learning curve.

I continually struggle with defining my niche, being helpful to others and -my biggest challenge – correctly interpreting the feedback I get.

Today’s adventure: is branding the same thing as Trademark?

The feedback I got on a written draft was "You should Trademark that phrase." If it resonates with one person, does it resonate with others? Is this where I set up some kind of poll or market research study?

Is there a benefit to Trademarking a phrase? Is it worth the time and effort to research and complete an application?

Marketing isn’t a dirty word – it’s a way of understanding human need. I can learn certain techniques. But mastery of marketing is not simply technical skill, it’s a gift.

Update on the Calcu-sex Lesson…

My 15-year old son watched this this evening at my request. Once the show was complete, I asked one simple question… what was the topic?

As I suspected, the boy had NO idea. He blushed and giggled and said, "All I can remember is X, X, X."

Uh-huh, my gut was right, this is no way to teach teenage boys math. It’s much better to get an OLD, Crotchety, MALE teacher — if you want them to actually learn the Rule of Constants. :O)

My son requested that I report this his current grade in Algebra 2 is an A+ (which I verified today), so he’s not just a poor student looking for an excuse. *giggle*

Also, he agreed that the other commercial was incredibly convincing where the issue of safe sex is concerned. It was nice to watch him cringe at the sight of an ill-behaved child. Ahhh, I’m gonna have well-behaved grandchildren… in a decade or so!

Should you trademark a phrase?

That depends. Trademarking is expensive and time-intensive. It should not be undertaken lightly.

If you plan to use the phrase as an essential portion of your branding, then you should consider the protection that trademarking offers. But, if it’s something that may change in the near future, or something you may update or "tweak" as your business grows, I’d wait.

Starting and running a business is an expensive proposition, you shouldn’t make any more financial commitments and you should safeguard your expenditure of time as much as possible through the process, so you don’t burn out.

I agree with you about the constant hawking for money for something or other from the schools. I live in Hopkinsville, KY, and my son (he’s in third grade) sends all kinds of crap home for me to pawn off on friends, family, and my co-workers to make money for his school…I wish they’d raise my taxes for the schools and be done with it.

I had the same problem when we were invited to my best friend’s daughter’s wedding in Philadelphia. I pulled my son out anyway, and he has 5 unexcused absences on his record this year……but his seeing Philadelphia was worth it by far!
He was thrilled to see where I grew up and he saw so many things….he loved it.

Amazing how KY is more concerned with losing money than the education of kids and the amazing learning experience they can have by making some exception to the school rules.

I agree, I also was very pleased with the chatterbug service til now. I wanted to give them a chance however now when you call their main number you get “all circuits are busy”.
2 weeks of service for the 10.00 monthly fee..hmmm not a good bargain for me. And what about next months charges? We cant get through to cancel .. will they continue to take the 10.00 per month??? I cant even sign in on their website

Cindy, I can tell you what has happened with MY account. On the 19th, I was charged another month’s service. The service has been flaky since the 16th and I’ve not been able to make a call that could be deemed comprehensible since the 18th.

So, I signed up on the 15th of February, have now paid two months by credit card and am out the cost of the device. So, my long distance charges for the less than 30 day period (because Feb. is a short month) now tops $40.00.

I’ve tried emailing, have left a message during the times that was an option, have used the directory to leave a direct email for Kathleen Clark (customer service head honcho) and have attempted to use the problem wizard on their website — which timed out several times before I gave up. I have also tried to remove my credit card number from my profile (it’s locked in) and now I sit and wait. And wonder how long it will be before I can get away from this bill for a service that doesn’t work and a company that doesn’t make other arrangements, or at least return calls.

I’ve reinstated my Qwest account now and my local phone company is assessing a $12.00 fee to add a long distance carrier. So the grand total for this little month-long adventure is now at $52.00 — plus the frustration and the time spent on the phone getting it all set up. :O(

Yes, it’s still down. I called the number to be sure when I saw your post. If you want to call it over the next few days to see if/when it changes, you can dial 866-690-3919 and then press 2 for the message.

Currently, it states that they are experiencing “technical difficulties” and that you should call back as they have no idea when the service will be available again, but will update the message for you.

On a personal note, I unplugged mine yesterday after finally giving up. A week is long enough. It’s TOO long.

I just found this posting location. I was one of the first dozen users of Chatterbug. They have reminded me with an email indicating such and they want to keep my business. Well reluctantly I went back to MCI this afternoon (Mar 3). As has been the indication of all here, this service has been fairly good in the past. I have lost 3 devices in the time that I have been using it. I am wondering if the “call to Europe” goal has created a problem for them. I have been an engineer all of my life and have worked for the top companies in the country and I have never seen this type of disregard for the customer. At least “tell them something meaningfull” like ” we ran out of money” or we are being sued”. I would have probably stayed longer but my wife said (and I quote) “You are crazy to put up with this”.
In retrospect yes I have!

I finally had to contact my bank and have them block the charge — once I went through the second week without any contact (by any of the means that I used to reach them) from this company. Perhaps it’s worth the effort to contact the Attorney General in California? I can’t find a working address, but I’m still researching (and I’m not alone).

Based on what’s happened to Vonage by Verizon, maybe Chatterbug got a legal notice to cease-and-desist their service from Verizon. (They probably were piggy-backing their long distance service on Verizon’s lines.) Whatever the issue was, they should have notified their customers one way or another. My email/voicemail messages went unanswered.

I was going to purchase Chatterbug last week when I found your comments at google.com. Thanks for preventing my making a big mistake. I DO wish, however, they would get their act together as every call I make is a long distance one (rural) and I need a service like this. Any good PR firm would tell them to ‘fess up and be honest with their customers….. Thanks again!

I received a call from Sean Ryan after many emails and phone calls to chatterbug support. He explained that we should have received update emails. I did not receive the 2nd or 3rd. I expressed my concerns that they should post a notice on their website in the future to keep customers up to date.

I noticed the the Arizona BBB shows that they tried to visit the company and make contact. But the doors were locked. Looks like it was updated recently to include that they are NOT going out of business.

Bottom line, if you are reading this in the future. Chatterbug was/is a great service. My only complaint is/are that their customer service is lacking and not keeping the customers up to date during a situation is unacceptable. Hopefully when you are reading this in the future they have fixed these two problems and are a thriving service.

I’ve no answer. 🙁 But I just won’t bother to make logins etc.
Most of the time I’ve cookies off, and I clear them regularly
anyway, and I’ve far too many passwords and wouldn’t want
to risk giving the wrong one to a stranger, so logins just
don’t work for me. I will turn cookies on to post though.

Tell your friends. I occasionally google for linux blogs
and a good 1/4 of them require logins. And lots of them
_need_ help.

I only recommend RH/Centos because I know they’ve recently done
Xen work. So has Suse, but they’re “mixed source” so it’s hard
to tell when you’re getting vendor lock-in, so why mess with
them. Debian also rocks, and apparently includes Xen.

An extra hard drive will give you the confidence to break
things. (But have a backup anyway! I don’t prefer dirvish
myself, but some like it. Regardless, a rsync based
backup with hard links is the way
to go for keeping lots of backup. Nobody should do without!
Get and old box and a big hard drive for backups and you
won’t regret it. Physical separation is good. 🙂

Uh. More linux:

As a newbie, install _only_ packages that come with
your distro. Otherwise upgrades will be hell.
(Linux makes upgrades easy and they should be
frequent.)

Use binary-only drivers, hate life. (Google if
you don’t believe me.) There can be reasons,
but watch out.

P.S. Last I checked a year ago LVM2 snapshots were
broken. If you find they’re fixed, let me know.
(Backup a snapshot for true backup goodness. 🙂

I keep all my notes on a Tiddlywiki. I use a few of them now, and transfer them from WinXP to Ubuntu systems. I keep my important school notes backup/published at discourse.tiddlyspot.com. The Tiddlysnip extension integrates in Firefox to act sort of like Google Notebook. I can’t live without the silly things anymore. And the community is really helpful (google groups).

Like you I spent some time looking. I started with Google Notebook, Firefox Scrapbook extension, then went on to backpackit, BasKet notes, Zoho.com’s wiki. Tiddlywiki beat them by being so modifiable. The range of plugins is insane.

I have yet to find a replacement for OneNote on Linux I like.
One feature I have yet to find in a replacement would be recording audio with notes attached to certain points in the audio file.

I’m amazed that I haven’t received any communication from them – after 5 emails and a few calls. Guess they figured either I was too angry a customer to deal with or (since I returned my dongle) it wasn’t necessary to “make nice” to me. Just wondering why they would have notified a select few instead of their entire customer base. Seems odd! It’s not as if they don’t have a way to get in touch with us. And for a “communications company”, they certainly have neglected their duty!

Robotchef – I agree that the irritated customers are a resource for PR “damage control” that they should have addressed. After all, those customers that are happy are far less likely to share their experiences than those who are unhappy — it’s a statistical fact.

We now have two Linux machines in the house (both children have one) and I’m working on a third (a laptop). I’m a FIRM believer in backups and use external mega-drives to accomplish this (I currently have over a terabyte of external hard drive space hooked up to my tablet PC alone) and most of my home machines have backup internal 320 gig drives too (for backups and redundancies).

Well, I exchanged my Outlook 2007 for Thunderbird for three reasons. First, Outlook 2007 takes FOREVER to launch. Second, it’s Microsoft (‘Nuff said on that point) and Third… I’m moving to Linux. I have a huge objection to the direction MS is taking with Vista and I’ve decided I’ll not follow them down that dark path. 🙂

I wish you luck. Do be careful with the screen when it arrives, they are sooooo thin and delicate and are quite easy to crack when installing. Mine is still working just fine and I use it all the time (so I know that the replacement steps work… even in the long term!)

Ok, so “boughten” actually IS in the dictionary… color me corrected. (It’s somewhere near “ain’t” I would assume.) I don’t care. Slang terminologies, non-standard and “created” past participles and contrived contractions are still not acceptable under my roof. (Besides, I might point out that it’s not listed as a verb in the dictionary… so “has boughten” still won’t work, even with the new “liberal” dictionary terms.) I hate such butchery. As goes the dictionary, so goes the society… down the tubes. I hate it. I really do. *Groan*

If you want to criticize a school system on how they speak and teach, you really should check your spelling and grammar.
First of all it is a lot, not alot. This is an incomplete sentence also, “Requirements which are, apparently, to watch movies and gab with friends during “free time.”. My goodness, I was wondering have you visited the schools and voiced your worries. It amazes me that you do not know everything that goes on in the schools, but you can voice your opinion. Do you volunteer? Do you visit often? Unless you have went to school to be a teacher and have actually taught, you should really keep your mouth shut. You have no idea what it is like. “Kinda” is not a word either. Make sure your daughter knows all of this, I wouldn’t want her sounding like a hillbilly. I don’t know where you are originally from, but I am sure you do not value compassion or love. Some of these kids need our love and attention while being educated. Some kids do not have rooms decorated to the max like your children. Take a look around mam, we are a safe alternative for many kids. Shame on you.

I agree, one should not use “alot” and “kinda” in formal writing. My spell check program always chastises me, but since that’s the way I speak (and this is a casual blog) I choose to type it the way I say it and ignore formal dictates as I know them.

I also agree that I should have used a complete sentence, as you noted. Instead, I opted (incorrectly) for typing a thought. My apologies.

Yes, I have voiced my concerns. I have blogged about voicing my concerns. I have voiced more concerns than I have blogged about the local education system. I’m also quite involved with my children’s education both in school and OUT of school. My children and I discuss their school day every afternoon when they arrive home.

I don’t leave the education of my children solely to the public school system.

Do I volunteer? Yes. I do, I have, and I probably will again in the future. Have I volunteered in the school system this year? No. This year, I’m busy raising a family and running a business. Will I next year? Probably.

I have also noted that, overall, I’m impressed with the elementary education locally. I’m dramatically underwhelmed by the high school. My concern on the blog you referenced is the lack of educational content once testing is over. Then, school basically stops and I object.

I do not believe that public, tax-funded education should be merely babysitting. Although, as you note, school may be “a safe alternative for many kids,” my own children are safe at home. I would prefer a safe, EDUCATIONAL curriculum for students while they are attending school.

I know problems with educational choices aren’t limited to the local system. My own hometown (Danville/Boyle County) recently had a flurry of news coverage for inappropriate movie viewing in school:

I simply can’t imagine viewing R-rated movies in school when I attended class at the high school. Any movies we watched (which were few and far between) had an actual educational component. Whereas, my middle school child (while attending Casey County) was permitted to see “Enough,” an R-rated movie I had NOT permitted him to watch at home. In my humble opinion, that particular movie had no redeeming qualities and was completely inappropriate for a middle school audience. My other son watched “Miss Congeniality 2” which, also was of no educational value — and had not been approved for home viewing. These were, of course, used to fill the day and babysit after CATS testing. (Note: My son reminded me of the “Enough” movie today. I think I had blocked that until he reminded me. I did remember the Miss Congeniality 2 and several other questionable movie incidents without his assistance.)

Yes, I recognize that children need love and attention — I have three children and they need “alot” of attention — but I would hope and expect that they receive an education during regular school hours. I don’t see love, attention and education as mutually exclusive goals. To assume that I “do not value compassion or love” would be an error and I’m not sure how you jump to that conclusion. If I didn’t care, I’d sit quietly and (as you recommended) keep my mouth shut.

Thank you for the compliment on Alex’s room. Isn’t it amazing what can be done with a quart of paint, some throw pillows, a strand of fabric flowers and a little imagination?

Although I agree on a couple of your points, I disagree on several.

Granted, I do not know everything that goes on in the schools. I doubt any single person could. But, I DO have a right to my opinion about the education of my children. I also have a right to voice that opinion (at least as long as the First Amendment is still standing — or wobbling — as the case may be.)

In answer to your comment, I’m from Kentucky (hometown is Danville, as mentioned earlier). I’m PROUD to be from Kentucky. I’m NOT proud to have the misconceptions — like your own reference to “hillbilly” — be the primary view of our fine state and our citizens. I believe that proper speech would improve this misconception. This is one reason I get so agitated when my own daughter learns proper grammar at home and unlearns it at school.

When I started reading your response, I assumed you were an educator in the local area. I also assumed that your punctuation and spelling errors were typos (I’m guilty of those, myself). But, once you said, “Unless you have went to school,” I could only wonder.

No, I do not know what it’s like to teach in the local school system. I can only imagine.

When I homeschooled my children, it was really hard to get in all the information they needed and to keep them both engaged and challenged — and I only had three students! A school counselor in the Casey County system referred to me as a “real” homeschooler. When I questioned that reference, the official explained that many “homeschooling” families in the area only “homeschool” to avoid truancy issues — because the kids didn’t want to go to school and the parents didn’t value education. I’m sure these challenges only make being a public educator more difficult.

When I taught other people’s children (on a preschool level), I was chastised for spending too much of my own, after-hours time developing preschool curriculum. I was told by the administration of that particular facility that we were babysitters, not educators and I was making the other “teachers” look bad.

So, I commend those able and willing to put up with the parents, the children, and the administration to do the job of teaching. I do wish, however, that teaching and education extended as long as the school year does. And, I would prefer that “free” days, television, movies and similar “babysitting” techniques be abandoned in school. If there is no educational offering at school following testing, I’d prefer to keep my children home … where they just might learn something.

My grandma who is into Feng Shui told me one time that it’s never OK to put paintings of horses figures in the living room. It’s plain and simple bad luck. The same is true when you hang any painting that shows a peacock or an ostrich.

I have several Feng Shui books, but I’d love to learn more about how to use it (in a practical way) in my new home. When I studied it before, I became confused about my own signs in relation to the directional corners of my home. I finally gave up!

I don’t have a painting of a horse in the living room (the horse I referenced is a toy that Alex has in her room and the mural I did has only a rabbit and some deer right now).

I used to have a print “The White Horse” that resided over my mantle for years… and bad luck as a result would have explained “alot” of happenings way back then!

That print now belongs to Byron and I’ll be sure to tell him to never hang it in the living room.

I completely agree with you that many companies and the government take too many liberties with people’s personal privacy. I found a network online that focuses on privacy and have very strict privacy guidelines. I an relate to this: I try to keep the clutter down on my desktop (the physical one, not the computer monitor one) and really prefer to have a few lovely utilitarian objects there rather than those that look like the are all from the same office supply store.

My favorite desktop objects are a beautiful antique pitcher rescued from a junk store (where I put either fresh flowers or knitting needles, depending on my mood) and an iron frog with holes in his back (pencils fit in it), found while scavenging the the ruins of a house that burned down in the 30’s, which is on the property of a friend’s mountain top property.

I also have a and carved miniature canoe in which I keep ink cartridges and refills for my collection of unique pens.

I love Levenger’s products, even though I’ve never actually bought anything from their catalog.

A whole COLLECTION of antique pens?!?! *sigh* I think I’m envious.

I’ve managed to buy some “velvet black” and some “purple mojo” inks from Private Reserve to mix so I’ll have my own signature color of purple-black ink for my fountain pen — but that’s as fancy as I’ve managed to get so far.

I also love “found” objects and new ways to use traditional or decorative items. And I used to keep a flowering plant or fresh flowers on my desk, but I got out of the habit. Your comment has reminded me that I need to do that again (and my current desk is large enough to handle a vase now!)

You should take a photo of your desk, it sounds beautiful, and send it to me. If you do, I’ll post it!

Best of luck! I will warn you that patience, a steady hand and careful consideration of how EXACTLY it’s all put together is necessary.

I had to just STARE at some parts as I was taking it apart to be sure before I exerted any pressure. The cables in particular were challenging – how they went in and how to get them out (and back in) safely. And the metal “rim” around the LCD screen was all kinds of fun too.

SUCCESS!! The panel came in the mail 2 days ago, so about a week to deliver to Berkeley, CA.
It took me about 2 hours, and I stripped one screw pretty badly (my little screwdriver head was just slightly mangled but I didn’t notice and until this one tough stuck screw, foolish of me to continue grinding at it with my bad driver), but the camera looks good and the screen is sleek, sexy and works perfectly!! Hooray!
I used powder-free latex gloves and worked on a clean desk, and did what I could to keep myself statically grounded. I didn’t notice the screw at the top right of the controller board but found it after a few minutes confusion, and I wasn’t sure I had connected the LCD flat cable correctly, in fact I’m still not sure it was pushed in all the way because I didn’t make a mental note of the way the connection on the old broken one looked, but the little plastic gate closed correctly and the screen works so whateva.
Also, I would recommend making a note (mental or otherwise) about the metal screw mount tabs on the external case halves, I spent ten minutes playing with the case to get it to line up correctly because I forgot how it went.

Oh, and I wasn’t sure how to remove the power button connector cable, I didn’t know how it was fit into its slot, so I actually thought the receptor slot WAS part of the cable head itself for a while, then realised it was stuck pretty well and that it WAS NOT the cable head, but the slot that the cable head is pushed into. Then it was easy to free the cable, once I knew what was what.

Use a good, CORRECTLY SIZED screwdriver!!!!! I had a bit of panic when I thought I had ‘screwed it up’ by striping one pretty badly. I was able to recover by using an exacto knife.

I think there are 5 differen types of screws needed to be removed in this operation.

External:
•2 long silver headed that go next to the tripod mount on the bottom
•4 short grey headed that go on the short grey colored sides (1 of which is under the rubber A/V OUT flap)
•1 short silver headed that goes on the bottom

Internal:
•2 long blue threaded that go somewhere (you’ll remember, at least, I did. Probly better to write it down, though.)
•Several short silver headed (maybe…5 of them?)
•1 long silver headed that went somewhere (better write it down, I remembered where it went at the time, though)

side note: 2 screws I removed did not need to be, but no harm done.

To get the LCD screen positioned on the white metallic reflector wasn’t that bad, that LCD screen is actually pretty tough and it would take some real force to break it, BUT BE CAREFUL ANYWAY.
The thin, rectangular plastic and the metal casings that sit around the LCD screen are NOT STRONG, but it was fairly intuitive as to how they clicked into the metallic reflector so not too hard to manage.

I have not fixed around with electronics before but THANKS TO ANGELA this 20 yr old novice was able to pull it off and save about $100!!

Thanks again Angela, I guess I’ll end my ramble about the experience now, it was quite satisfying, too.

This is just a way to use my own Mozilla-based calendar system and Google’s public calendar to always have a sync’ed copy of my calendar available from my iPhone.

By using this method, I can see my private calendar from any location where my iPhone has a signal. Thus, I don’t have to use Outlook to keep an up-to-the minute version of my schedule with me all the time.

Even when it’s just a non-personal item like a gate, it’s normal to feel both outraged and vulnerable about the theft. It is truly hard to take when someone steals your stuff.

The gate was bad, the nasty words spray-painted on the side of my building was worse. I did manage to get it mostly covered up over the weekend, but it will require completely repainting the entire building to remove all remnants.

yeah, four years ago linux hardly managed all the usb and plug and play stuff…today the only problems are still webcams and nvidia graphic cards.

with other hardware linux does better than windows in 70% of cases! you forget that something like drivers exists because you don’t install them anymore!

It was hard to share this, Jeff, but it’s an honest, raw look at where I was right before things started to open up and the business went from barely providing to providing plenty. This was in Feb. by October, I’d launched WickedWordCraft.com and then I released my first business name and URL. Wicked was what I really wanted to do and once I committed to it, the doors just opened up.

Pretty amazing in retrospect, but this personal experience is what made me believe that if you do what you love, your needs will be met.

I was a little late learning this one, but it did “stick” once I learned it. :O)

I purchased two Uni-Ball Signo 207 Pens from my College Bookstore. After a quick test of the pens on my notebook I thought it would be a good pen. The next day during class it came time to put the pens to the test and see how well they perform. The results speak for themselves. They are literally the Worst Pens I have ever purchased. I could not complete a sentence without having the pen skip. It got to the point that I had to switch to a basic Bic Ball Point Pen.
Bottom line if you don’t mind having to go over your writing to correct any letters and add letter’s to complete words due to the skipping then you might find this pen ok.

Become a Freegan. Seriously. The less material stuff I own, the happier I am.

Give that stuff away to people who will use it. By joining a Freegan network, you give stuff you are not using to people who CAN use it. Stuff goes into another person’s life(they come and pick it up), instead of the land fill.

I always feel good when I lose weight. Doing something good for the environment is an added bonus.

Honestly, I have given away a turntable, video camera, cell phone, dehydrator and all kinds of useful space hogs.

I’ve also received EXACTLY what I need for what it costs in time and gas to pick up.

When I’m done with it, I pass it on.

I hope to reduce my personal belongings down to a backpack (not book bag) one day.

Moving is a blessing and a curse. I let go my entire LP collection, including my imported copy of ELECTRIC LADYLAND. Books and videos I dearly love found new homes, too.

I can access most of that material at the library. It’s not gone forever, it’s just not cluttering my closets and shelves.

I always liked the Native American attitude toward wealth. The more you can give away, the wealthier you are.

Ah, if only our clown politicians embraced that philosophy.

I agree with you, JJ. I’ve often said I think I was a turtle in a previous life. I prefer things that are portable (even if I don’t go anywhere). In my ideal world, I’ll have much less stuff.

I feel lighter, happier and better when I have fewer things (yes, including personal physical weight). I hope to pare down even more when I arrive at the cabin and complete the work there. My mother says she can’t believe I have anything else to donate (since that’s always been my chosen method of stuff distribution and since I “pare down” so extremely and so often.)

At that point, I’ll know what space I have and what I’ll need to finish the work. Here, I need different things than I will there.

Once my house is complete, I truly believe I’ll be able to pare down to a minuscule number of personal items and be both lighter and happier.

Thanks for telling me about freegans, I’ve looked up their website now: (http://www.freegan.info/). It looks like a really extreme version of the steps advocated in “Your Money or Your Life” — one of my favorite books.

You are a riot, JJ. You will love “Your Money or Your Life” and I plan to re-read it when I get back to the farm and have a bit of time. It’s the only book I’ve ever purchased in duplicate so I’ll always have one to lend and always have one on my own shelf. I like it that much.

Now, I’m off to the Habitat for Humanity “Restore” to pick up the Corian countertop that I purchased this last weekend to build my kitchen island. The beast is 6′ 8″ across and will dominate the downstairs of the cabin — but it will solidify the “gathering place” and will make the old-fashioned idea of the kitchen as the heart of the home come true at my house.

(I buy as much as I can at the Restore because it benefits Habitat, it recycles used products and it saves me a fortune.)

I’m interested in the couple of issues which bother you … as a Libertarian, I’m going to guess that they’re the couple of issues that bother me as well, and tell you the problems I had, and why I decided that they were OK.

The first problem I had with RP’s position was abortion. I’m pro-choice, he’s pro-life. I resolved this because he is also a constitutionalist. That means that at worst, the decision would go back to the states, which should have been the ones to make the decision in the first place. In today’s political climate, I would be surprised if anybody except Kansas and Idaho outlawed abortion, and so long as it isn’t a federal ban, even people there would just have to drive a couple hours to get one. This would not be optimal, but it would be acceptable to me.

The second is immigration. I would love to have open borders. The problem is, to open our borders with a welfare state would be economic suicide. So for me, this is an issue of ordering. Lets shut down the welfare state, get economic growth going to the point where there is no involuntary unemployment (which in the absence of the welfare state wouldn’t take long) and then open the borders. There would be no reason to immigrate except to work, and there would be no reason to prevent it.

So did I guess your couple of issues right?

I wish a third party candidate could come in and shake up the status quo with a WIN, not merely a showing — but without that option, I couldn’t be more pleased with a Republican-Libertarian like Ron Paul.

I’ve spent several hours today (after my blog above) learning more about this man, about his voting record, about his stand on the issues and… I think I’m in love.

I’ve not looked forward to voting in many MANY years, and he’s got me ready to go cast a ballot right now.

My issues were Net Neutrality and reproductive rights, so you were right on one of them. Having read Paul’s response to why he’s against Net Neutrality, I can agree with his reasons. And, it’s not like me to WANT regulation — but the telcoms scare me.

The abortion issue is a wash, since he not only states his personal and professional pro-life stance as an ob-gyn, but also defends the rights of the states to make individual decisions on the topic, removing the federal government from that issue. I too agree that this should be a state-based decision, not a federal one.

I think such things are personal decisions and my personal views aside, I’d defend to the death someone else’s right to do as they please. ‘Nuff said on that.

This man is intriguing… and his views are worthy of inspection!

I didn’t investigate any automated routes, other than looking in the “help” menu of both programs. I probably should have spent a bit more time on that. Instead, I used that opportunity to clean up old information and compress multiple entries into single ones for the same websites, software and topics.

There are some impressive examples of new technology on the horizon (somewhat more expensive for set up than the Chatterbug concept) that I will probably try later this year or next (once it’s been out long enough to have more online reviews) — one is called ooma (http://www.ooma.com).

After the Chatterbug ordeal, I’m a bit shy about cutting edge devices of this type.

For now, I use Qwest’s flat rate plan — $25 unlimited calling to US and Canada. It works for me, but may not be available in your area.

I did have billing issues when I first set up the Qwest plan — they overbilled me (one bill being over $600!!!), but they resolved the issues and adjusted my bill properly and I’ve been with them for quite some time (except briefly when I tried Chatterbug).

Andreas – If you have a system you like, and it’s working for you — STICK WITH IT. (If it’s not broken, don’t fix it!)

I’m anti-windows and am working diligently to remove all windows machines from my life.

If, however, I liked Windows, I’d probably stick with Outlook. I enjoyed it (other than the excruciatingly extended launch time and the difficulty of backup). Having everything all in one place is nice — if you can launch first thing in the morning and not have to reboot during the day and wait for a large program to boot.

I like how quickly and completely I can backup my Thunderbird, but I quit using the calendar plugin after I wrote this post and am now exploring an online solution for that.

Hi Angela, I arrived at your site because of your links about tiny houses, but I’m duly impressed you put this command line tip up for other Kubuntu users. I’ve been using smb4k (http://smb4k.berlios.de/) to back up my Kubuntu system to a Windows network drive. You know what seems even better in concept, the “Keep” backup http://jr.falleri.free.fr/keep/wiki/Home that is part of KDE but I’ve never got it to work with an external drive.

Anyway, tiny houses. I couldn’t find pictures of the one you said you were building… perhaps I just didn’t dig deep enough in the blog? You might be curious about mine… there are many pictures buried in the posts at http://bottleworld.net/?cat=20 .

I don’t really have any photos of my cabin on the blog. I really should do that, I suppose.

On using the Keep backup — I tried that early on and found it to be less than useful.

I recently managed to do a non-compressed backup on an external before upgrading to Kubuntu 7.10.

By segmenting the “home” directory on its own partition on my original install, I did the upgrade as painlessly as I had hoped. I merely updated the var and swap and root partitions (yes, I gave them each their own!) and left home as it was.

It was the smoothest update ever! And soooo much better than trying to update using the automatic “upgrade” option — which often breaks the OS.

Your site is being redesigned, so I’ll try a bit later to check out your photos. Thanks for the comment.

I believe Chatterbug is a scam. They are charging their customers’ credit cards and not providing any service to them. They’ve been charging my credit card for months and I haven’t been able to make a long distance call with their device.
I hope somebody files a lawsuit against them on behalf of all their customers whom they have ripped off.

Geeze. I posted on here about a year ago… Here I am again. early April… 2008 now. Chatterbug looked like it started working mid 2007. Late 2007 it started getting intermittent. I sent emails over many months and left a few voice messages since Thanksgiving. No answers… just charges. I finally got a one month refund. I though I would give their website one last try before calling the bank. I found it under construction. I give up.

I like the additions you made. Web capture is a big one.

– I’m currently using TomBoy for notes, and I like it.
– I also ADORE the Zotero application add-on for Firefox.
– I find that the search feature on both Tomboy and Zotero are outstanding.

If I could mix Zotero with Tomboy to develop a perfect note-taking operation and get it all to fit on a quick-to-access thumbdrive that would work on any OS, well, I’d be in heaven.

Hmmm, and while I’m dreaming, how about a simple universal addressbook and IMAP-only email access option — so I could check my email anywhere, and search it with the same note-taking search tool — so when I needed information from my notes or an email I could get it.

Can you tell I’ve been tweaking my new WordPress install for hours and am getting a bit “punchy?” :O)

Personally knowing some operational people involved with the Chatter Bug venture, I can readily state that they are hardworking; ethical and conscientous individuals who placed the priority where it should have been – on the customer or subscriber. Unfortunately, their ethics and integrity were all undermined by Sean Ryan who has run a very good concept into the ground. In tandem, he has obfuscasted and misrepresented information to shareholders for a long time. Ufortunately for them, the capital they committed is neither refundable or is recoverable. If you want the lastest email address and corporate update, I will be glad to forward it. Place the blame squarely on him as those hired have not been paid in a long time and were prevented from carrying out their tasks under his managment conduct and style.

I was probably one of the earlier subscribers. The service worked fine for several months, but then went down. I wasn’t too concerned because I had a LD connection to handle european calls which I could use. I checked my credit card bill and no charge had been made. About two months later I called them to see if they were in business. They said they had made several changes and if I wanted to re-instate I would have to insert a string of coding from the keyboard of my telehone. I agreed and tried to get the code installed but it would not work for me. They told me they would ship me a new unit with the code installed and it would be free and postpaid. The new unit worked fine until the whole system died for good. When the service went down the last time, they stopped billing my credit card. I don’t recall any dates when all this happened, but I will add that they never sent any emails to warn me that they were in trouble. From my perspective I guess they are overwhelmed techniically, but I believe they are basically honest.

Hi Jan! I’m currently using Gmail and Google Calendar and several other web-based apps. I moved my email over to this about four weeks ago.

My problem with the Gmail (other than the privacy issues — see the small print of their terms of service for details on the fact that they can do whatever they please with your personal information) is that my email arrives with my Gmail account listed (and my main email listed), despite the fact that it’s supposed to offer only the main email account. This doesn’t look extremely professional.

On the pro side, I love the spam filters, the ability to access my email from anywhere (linux OS, windows OS, across the house (on another computer) or across the continent.

I’m still playing with this and haven’t made a final decision yet.

I stumbled upon this open source program some time ago, and I still think it’s pretty effective and simple.

It’s called ScrapBook and it’s a relational database that saves plain text in a searchable file. It has a search window above the text display window and it searches very fast. You can tag pages, or “cards” as they are called in the program, to export as text files or comma delimited files. And it’s a simple self-contained program so you can launch it on any Windows computer from a thumb drive. Not sure if it works on Linux or Mac; the author may offer versions that do.

I love the concept of worketc.com, but not being able to test it (without giving credit card information) to see how well it worked for me was a show-stopper.

All the other options I tested let me have a limited account, a trial full-featured account or some other hands-on option. That alone gave me the ability to evaluate the offerings fully on their merit and find their strengths and weaknesses.

Also, I wanted to be sure that each of my clients could log on and safely/securely see the area containing their information, without seeing any of my other information (or other clients’ information) and to have to pay for each of my clients to become a user would become expensive — quickly.

As a freelance/independent I didn’t really need employee timesheets, but I did need a substantial amount of space to store client docs and data — and I couldn’t find where the amount of space available for each account was listed (I may have missed that).

I do like that Worketc.com had a built in financial program for a small business. The option I selected didn’t offer this, so I’m still using CashBoard.com for those features.

Thunderbird seems to be 10x better with IMAP, faster better integration. Plugins are mostly free. With outlook I could not find a plugin I liked to delete duplicate messages and they were all high$$, with Thunderbird I found a plugin that just works with a right click. I have only been using it for this morning and I love it so far.

Wal-Mart jsut sold me today two chatterbug devices. not being from arizona i had never heard of the service, the device, or any of its issues apparently a full year prior to my purchase. from the exterior packaging i assumed this would be a good buy for myself and for my dad since my dad is having financial hardships after multiple strokes and heart attacks. I tried calling the number…no suh number. tried emailing and going to the site no such luck on either. so basically I bought myself some pretty paperweights. One would figure that Wal-Mart would be aware of the issues with the products they sell and have taken them off the shelf. apparently this is not the case here in NY. well than you for the info guess i will have to keep looking for a voip that doesnt utilize broadband access still. Some things are sometimes too good to be true.

The good thing about “wally-hell” is that they will take back the items you purchase there. Take your receipt and get your money back. Second, don’t give up on a decent VOIP product. There is a new Wi-Fi phone for Skype that’s getting great reviews and will work from any hotspot (no computer required.)

Stay tuned, technology is delivering, it’s just delivering a bit slower than we would like and Chatterbug was a huge bump in the road for many of us.

I have been using the Outlook 2007 trial–just because I’ve used Outlook for so long–because I just LOVE the way my emails look with html signatures for each of my accounts.

I love gmail EXCEPT: no HTML Signatures, and no insertion of pictures…they are attached instead.

However, I’ve had Thunderbird on my computer for awhile, and I can insert pictures into the emails, and I can make HTML signatures.

I use both Zoho Apps and Google Apps, and in my very small 3-person company (with few, if any “security issues”) I am moving almost exclusively to Web 2.0.

I do have MS Office 2007 products (Excel, Word, PP).

The Outlook has nice features–but I am thinking that I don’t need Outlook 2007; especially just because of the email feature.

I’ll keep you posted…my Outlook 2007 trial ends soon; and I am almost sure that (with hands shaking…) that I will NOT purchase and use open source for my personal and business use.

Personally, I’ve dropped my landline and use my 800 number and cell phone (in combination) for all incoming calls. Since I call most of my clients, I use outgoing SKYPE (testing this for quality issues right now). The cost for unlimited outgoing calls? $2.99 per month. Not bad. They also have devices (a bit pricey) for us as a cordless phone over Wi-Fi (from anywhere).

I’m still testing for quality before buying any additional equipment.

Let me just whole-heartedly agree with you, that I am HATING MobileMe. It is, indeed, slow. It is not responsive even with the simplest tasks – like auto-filling addresses from contacts on email. It can’t even to manage to actually “keep me logged in for 2 weeks” which it offers every time I log on, and yet EVERY TIME I have to log in again! If this is the new … bring back the old!
(And it is SO difficult to actually find a customer service email address on Apple’s sites, that you can’t even complain to them about it. You can join a chat group about it, but, heaven forbid you get to complain directly to the people collecting your money.) Disappointing. The first Apple product that I’ve been so diappointed with!

You can easily 2-way sync your ipod touch or iphone with google calendar if it is jailbroken. I’ve been using NemusSync, which is a “featured” download in installer. It works well enough. Ultimately, if all your computers and iphone 2-way sync with google calendar, then all of them will have identical calendars, no matter which one you use to edit the calendar.

Well I managed to import my Address Book directly from Outlook 2007 into Thunderbird no problem. (He He!! First time I managed to do something somebody else couldn’t!!)

I am having problems however with my email messages…tried the olook express option but no luck yet, will keep trying though.

Back in April 08, I received an email from Chatterbut stating that they would be contacting me, the standard email to let you know that they have received your email, and one of their staff would be contacting you back. However, there were no emails after that. I noticed on the web tonight, that there is finally something on their site, and you can actually put product in your shopping cart, so I sent them an email. The email was just bounced back as being undeliverable. Don’t know if they are back up and running or not. I may try their 800 number next wk to see if something has really developed or not.

Well, I just tried to call ChatterBug @ 1(866) 690-3919, which is the toll free number on their package, and I was informed that the phone number is not in service. So, I guess its anyone’s guess as to wh at is happening.

I fixed the iPhone by removing all programs (apps) and all music and videos and returning it to the “as delivered” state. Then I checked for updates, installed the new iPhone software (which would not install when it was crashing apps), and added back on the apps that I knew were good.

I think this was caused by a couple of buggy apps that made it to the app store because some of the error messages included references to a couple of my app programs.

Those apps won’t be back on my iPhone again.

I imagine the problem was related to your apps and not iTunes itself. I upgraded to 7.7.1 when it came out and have had no problems. Of course, I only have a select few (free) apps running on my iPhone right now. Glad that you got it worked out.

And today, after a sync, I have some apps that work, and some that don’t. I’ll be glad when this thing is fixed. I thought it was a buggy app that caused my issues. Apparently it’s not.

I’m not willing to remove all the apps again, since I’ve been storing information that matters to me in a couple. I don’t want to lose the data. Maybe I’ll figure out how to save the info elsewhere. *sigh*

As viranh, I’m using NemusSync to sync bidirectionally all my appointments. Unfortunately syncing the contacts are not yet implemented but in the ToDo list (the author write me it’s just a problem to have time to implement it). Maybe if people write to him to implement soon this feature….

Jerry –

If you have access to your server, you can set up your email as IMAP, rather than POP. This means that the email will stay resident on your server and can be seen from both Outlook and the iPhone. Any changes you make to email on your iPhone will be reflected on your server (and visible in webmail) and in your Outlook.

Likewise, if you make changes in Outlook, it will be visible everywhere. It also means you won’t have to delete items in both places or wonder about replies and sent mail (they will be in the IMAP sent folder).

IMHO, not nearly enough people with multiple devices utilize this option.

Thank you Angela, apreciate your quick reply. Here is what I am trying to do:

I have a doctor I work for, he has an iPhone that currently syncs without issue with his Outlook. I don’t have access or permissions to the domain or exchange server. He primarliy uses Thunderbird for email and is a bigger fan of this email application than he is of Outlook.

He wants to be able to sync his iPhone with Thunderbird, not sure if push and pull are options, or if push is even an option, but that is what he would like to do. I know that the exchange server is pop, but that the iPhone supports imap, smtp, and pop, but not sure of the configurations.

So, to make it short and sweet, here are my limitations:

1. I do not have access to the exchange server.
2. I would like to have the doc be able to sync his contacts and email from Thunderbird.

What are my options from where you sit, thank you, Jerry.

I wasn’t there of course, but what you describe sounds familiar. I’m with you about not minding nearly so much when parents are offering their child some sort of guidance, are attempting to set some sort of reasonable limit, or simply attempt to intervene (e.g. taking the kid out of the store when they are shrieking). No matter how bad the tantrum or the behavior, I have a lot more patience in those cases. When the parents opt to do nothing, whether out of cluelessness; laziness; just adhering to their parenting philosophy, etc I must say I find it pretty annoying.

I think helping to orient one’s child to the rest of the world and the needs and rights of others is a gift we can offer them that many kids miss out on in large part these days. Seems like pendulum thing. It certainly was good when we historically moved from treating children like property and began to have some regard for their feelings and preferences. But the pendulum for many has continued to swing to where the kids are raised with far too little awareness of the needs, feelings and rights of those around them…which I think in the long run does the child in question no favors. Generally, they WILL learn it, but the question is whether they do so with the loving guidance of their parents, or whether the learning is postponed til the price tags are much higher when their peers, roommates and fellow employees teach them often in much harsher and more painful ways than we can pull off as parents.

Why do parents think everyone else wants to hear all of that shrieking too? I guess I am an old fogy too. I try so hard when I take me grandchildren out to keep them at a civil tone and to behave. Which sometimes seems to be harder for the little one, but she somehow over comes her desire to think she is with her mother. But society has made it hard for these parents to be parents by threatning Child Protective Services on them if they spank them. I mean my goodness teachers are even scared of the kids these days. Remember when you had respect for your bus driver and your teacher? Well those days are gone. The kids themselves threaten to call CPS if the parent spanks them. Now, mind you mine tried that on me once, and only once. I believed in spanking and I believed in manners and I still do, grandkids and all. But as long as society takes the kids that are trying to be handled and gives the kids back that are being abused, we as a society are destined to fail.

I certainly understand the frustration expressed by Delayne about how parents often feel backed into a corner with no good options. Just to be clear, I am not myself advocating spanking. As a parent coach and child and family therapist, I know there are far more effective things we can do that teach reasonable limits and help orient children to the fact that others around them also have needs and rights, without ending up with the long-term, side effects that come along with the use of spanking. In Oregon where I practice, spanking is not a “reportable” child abuse offense unless it is excessive (as in leaving bruises for instance). I just know that in the long-run it has some pretty serious downsides compared to alternatives that take a bit more thought, and self-calming skills on the part of the parents.

An example might be leaning over and whispering to the child, “Do you think you’re going to be able to get yourself calmed down here, or are you going to need to be somewhere else?” If they child keeps screaming, you can lean over and say, “Bummer, looks like you’re going to need to head to the car for a break. Let’s go.” If the child doesn’t start moving, it can be onto, “Can you make it to the car on your own like a big kid, or do you need some help?”

What I would recommend from there would depend completely on the child, their age, the history of the problem and other circumstances. One example might be having the child come up with a plan before the next fun thing they do when they get home, or using other logical consequences, this sort of behavior can be replaced with more appropriate store behaviors in pretty short order. When we play our cards right, we can have the child practicing lots of thinking and decision making in the process.

So anyway, that is the gist of my thinking insofar as I can convey it briefly here. I do agree though that letting kids abuse everyone else’s ears isn’t fair to others and isn’t even good for the child in the long run.

Oh, I don’t know, Michael. I don’t advocate abuse, but I do believe that spanking is sometimes necessary. I know that makes me “out of step” but when I hear someone respond to a tantrum with, “What’s the matter, honey?” or “What do you want, Junior?” I’m thinking…”What a crock!” I think giving extra attention and trying to fulfill desires of a misbehaving child is to reward that behavior.

I think quickly correcting the behavior is sometimes necessary. I do not advocate ever touching a child when the adult is angry — that’s a slippery slope. That’s making the adult feel better, and children should not be a frustration target for parents — or anyone else.

I wholeheartedly agree with natural consequences when that’s possible but do not approve of allowing the child to “get control of themselves” while abusing the rights of those around them. I advocate no choice in those circumstances… you scream, you get removed from the public place. To me, that’s natural consequences and there is no choice.

Of course, I’m not a child psychologist and the likes of “Dr. Spock” makes me want to wretch… but I digress.

Question for you… one that stumps me, even after three kids… how to handle lying. That one makes me feel helpless, hopeless and agitated. To me, truth and honesty is the basis of character and I make no secret of it to my children. Yet, I’ve been through a pretty serious few bouts of lying with all three of my kids and am in the middle of another one now with the youngest… just when I thought that mountain had been scaled, flagged and conquered. 🙂

I’m not saying what anyone else should do. I just want to be clear about my position. I never even tell my clients what they need to do, I just share with them what I think is most likely to be effective.

You and I agree on not allowing the child to “abuse the rights of those around them”. And I think we at least partially overlap on knowing that what lots of people consider healthy reasoning with an upset child we might see some potential for fueling more misbehavior.

I don’t think children experience a choice followed by the adult taking action as getting away with anything. When I say “Can you get to the car on your own, or do you need help?” to a tantruming four year old, and then when he doesn’t start moving and I pick him up, my credibility as an adult ratchets up every time I do it. He learns that he gets to retain a reasonable amount of control if he’s making responsible choices. When he’s unwilling to make a reasonable choice, he learns pretty quickly that when I need to I can handle him without a sweat. He is apt to experience me as relatively fair and himself as a kid with a parent who can handle him, which seems to be very calming for kids.

It is frustrating and disappointing when our kids lie to us. Lying is very complex usually takes me at least a one-hour session to cover the basics. All I can say here is that my reasoning behind offering choices within limits, and more broadly sharing control in strategic places has to do with the way that I see kids tend to respond in the long run. One of the effects is that they tend to be more responsible, with honesty being one dimension of that. All of these concepts are things I blog regularly about.

Anyway. gotta get back to work. Great topic that is very important. I like the way that blogs (like wickedblog) are opening this stuff up for public discussion. Again, what I’ve expressed here are of course nothing more than my take on it as one child and family therapist making his best, educated guess based on experience.

Choices for children are a must I completely agree. I always found it helpful for my child to give her a two choices both which were what I wanted anyway but in a way that gave her the feeling in which she was getting her way as well. That way we were both happy.

It’s not always an easy solution when you want it to go your way to come up with two ways for them to choose. And that they will like, but ultimately you gain respect and they gain the responsiblity of making the best choice for them and being able to live with the choice they made.

Lying, well all kids are going to do it. I always used the little boy the cried wolf. My daughter 20 years later will tell you she heard that story so many time she thought she would scream. I just wanted her to understand that one day, when it was most important, I must be able to believe her and trust her.

Lying would just keep making me mistrust her and make her have to earn my trust. Too much time wasted, to earn that trust thing. But it’s the age too. They will outgrow it, eventually. And trust me when I say, when they start having children of their own they will appreciate all the things your trying to do now. They don’t stay this age forever.

Does anyone know of any other options for long distance service? I have searched far & wide but without any luck. We live in the middle of nowhere (out in the woods) in a small town in Georgia. My only means of internet is through dial up. (unless, of course, I want some expensive high speed from HughsNet) For over 10 years, I never had a problem or reason to find new long distance service, but… AT&T decided that “Unlimited Long Distance” shouldn’t cover dial up service anymore! And, of course, I knew there would be problems once AT&T took over Bellsouth. I am NOT happy!

Anyway, please, please, please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

I feel your pain (been in the boonies, trying to work myself). Skip the HughesNet. Been there, done that too. You pay a small fortune and they continue to over-sell the bandwidth without really upgrading the infrastructure. The end result is REALLY expensive dial-up speeds with an iron-clad contract and no hope for escape from it.

I don’t know if it’s available in your area, but until just a couple of months ago, I was using Qwest. They have an unlimited $25 per month plan (you have to ask for it). I found the service to be great and if I had a long-distance dial-up situation, I’d still have it!

You can go online to check your area (it was available in my recent rural area), but even if you don’t see it available on the web, call them. Mine didn’t show up online, but when I called I could get it.

I heard Obama’s speech at a Planned Parenthood rally where he said that if his daughters made a mistake, he wouldn’t want them to be “punished with a baby”. My husband and I were aghast at his language. Mu husband said, “that’s like saying that if you run up your credit card, you shouldn’t be punished with debt… it’s not punishment it’s just an effect!”
I wasn’t thinking at the time about the fact that our new president probably does see debt as unfair punishment…

We’re a bit scared and politically lonely, too. For sure.

We shall see over the next few weeks and months whether or not the majority of Americans support this “no responsibility” era in our history. I do hope that there are enough of us left who believe in personal responsibility, that this idea doesn’t become and ideal.

Hi. I am the coordinator of a Fearlessly Female Mother/Daughter Pajama Party, held in Lodi CA the weekend before mothers day every year. I am right with you!!! That “parenting” advice was not appropiate advice. We do have “break outs” in our conference with different topics and its one hour out of the two day conference that the mothers & daughters might be split up as we let them choose which break out they attend, but the point of the conference is to foster the relationships between them not keep them seperated.

I’ve done the homeschooling route to try to give her what she needs, but it is sorely lacking in the social education portion and that lack of social exposure really showed up this year.

(She figured out pretty quickly how to keep me happy — but that doesn’t mean she can get along quite as swimmingly with other adults and her peers.)

I’d consider private school in a second, even though it would strap me financially, if there were viable options in this area. There aren’t.

I’ve seriously considered moving to another location to be able to do the private school thing, but I’ve not been able to make a decision on that yet. I have decided to keep her in the public system this year, no matter how frustrated I become and see how it works. Then, rather than home schooling all summer (like I did last year), I’ll take that time to investigate all the other options and see what I can find.

Well, lets see…

You can create a demand for just about anything with the appropriate marketing. After all, I can remember a time when people paid good money for “pet rocks.” (I can even remember WANTING one, if that tells you anything.)

Do I recommend creating a market for something like that? Not really. But if you have something of value (real or perceived) to sell, having the right marketing will help you reach the right buyer.

Personally, I believe marketing should be more informative than overtly promotional. My own definition of marketing is to develop a recognizable brand and to eloquently communicate the benefits of the product in a forum most likely to be populated by those who will need or want the product.

You then can use the link below to sync your iphone to Google calendar. Long way around, but it works for me. I have not found a way to sync contacts yet.

I probably had success at least on an average of one post a day in November (and October) on my blog. Right now, I keep tripping over my notes and the chapters I did write and have this pulling urge to work on it more. Then I put it back where I found it and try to get my “paid” work all caught up and continue with the organization/elimination process that’s making life so much sweeter these days. 🙂

Oh let me add my two cents – I love EVERY Apple product and I loathe mobileme. I have tried EVERY browser available on the market and it doesn’t work right with any of them. At least half the time I send an e-mail only to be greeted with the “can’t connect” message and lose the e-mail altogether. My connection is super fast and reliable with everything else so I know it’s this app. I hate it, I really do. I get so frustrated. When I am on my home Mac e-mail is great, not much trouble with the iPhone either but running it on my HP laptop remotely is a DISASTER. If you are serious about business, do NOT count on mobileme for your e-mail as remote access is a nightmare.

I think you have fallen to exactly what I see happen all the time in the realm of technology, especially with computers and to a lesser extent things like cameras, printers, and probably cell phones. We get up sold on features that we really do not need, desire, and a lot of cases, never use. I don’t the number of laptops I see that are ramped up technology over filled boats that weigh in closer to 10 lbs, have features out the yin-yang, and only end be used to browse the web, a little word processing, and once a blue moon a spread-sheet. After all, who really needs WAN cell based modems, 7200 RPM drives, Core-Duo based lightning fast chips, along with blue tooth in a laptop? Okay, okay… I did just order one, but then again I am the IT guy and will actually used all that.

Yet when it comes to handling big inboxes, once your inbox grows to several gigabytes… I dont know.
Most serious business users would rather use something reliable then something unreliable, slow, buggy and that often suffers from data corruption, even if the software looks like something the flinstones would use.
So when asking tb vs ol, you gotta consider this situation. I cant answer the question and pick a winner, i have never seen how Thunderbird handles multiple gigabytes inboxes and hundreds of rules.

In the past ten years of living in this house I have not had any encounters with bats. However, last week I woke up very early one morning with a bat flying around the bedroom (I sleep with the sliding and french doors open). I took the cats out of the room, closed the door and after a few minutes it flew out.

Today, I come into my office and there is a bat sleeping on the pelmet. It remained there even when I went out for two hours, closed the office door and opened the sliding door.

I’ve been asking myself “why TWO bats in the space of a few days?” and the following ideas (gleaned from the internet) resonate with me:

The animal symbolism of the bat speaks of:
• Illusion
• Rebirth
• Dreams
• Intuition
• Initiation
• Journeying
• Inner Depth
• Communication

The Native American animal symbolism of the bat comes from a keen observation of this magnificent animal. These people recognized that the bat was highly sensitive to their surroundings and so therefore was considered a symbol of intuition, dreaming and vision. This made the bat a powerful symbol for Native American shamans and medicine people. Often the spirit of the bat would be invoked when special energy was needed, like “night-sight” which is the ability to see through illusion or ambiguity and dive straight to the truth of matters.

To the the Chinese, the bat symbolized good fortune and great happiness. They also maintained that the bat flies head downwards because of the weight of its brains. Mayans saw them as symbols of initiation and rebirth. The have also been viewed as miniature dragons.

A book called Popol Vuh was discovered in the 17th century. In is is a tale of two brothers who were being tested. One test took them to a labyrinth of huge bats overseen by Camazotz, the god of the bats. He had the body of a human, the head and wings of a bat, and carried a great sword by which he would decapitate unwary wanderers. It is a symbolic story, with imagery that reflects transition. It implies a loss of faculties if someone is unwary of the changes of transition. It also holds the promise of rebirth and coming out of darkness.

The bat is a symbol of the challenge to let go of the old and create the new – death and rebirth. To many this is distressing, thus so much negativity around it. They symbolize the facing of fears – entering the dark on the way to the light.

Bats as totems represent an ability to discern the hidden messages and implications of other people’s words. Listen as much to what is not being said. Trust your instincts. The nose is the organ of discrimination, and with its sonar located in its nose, the bat reflects the ability to discriminate and discern the truth in other people’s words.

Eastern cultures view the bat as a symbol of wealth, longevity, peace, good health and a good death. In China, the symbol for bat is “fu” — which is also the symbol for “good luck.” If one ever flies into your home, you won’t want to do any harm to it cause it brings you luck!

Since bats are the only winged creatures to suckle their young, they are also a symbol of motherhood (and by association… fertility and sexuality… which is also supported by the dwelling in caverns in the “womb” of mother earth.)

Completely agree with your thoughts on this. I really hate that everyone in the world seems to think they need this kind of information. I hate it even more when I run across privacy policy records similar to those that you described. I am even more surprised to see a medical group have a privacy policy as you describe, as I am sure that is a violation of federal law under HIPPA. Even more absurd though is the number of folks who suggest such information in secure in their computers and they have open wireless (with either no or minimum) security running for the the office.

I seldom tweet these days. Heck, I’m even blogging less often. I do spend most of my “twitter” time on FaceBook these days, keeping in touch with the people I know a little more personally. My social networking habit became a time-suck to the point I had to pick and choose. I still have auto-notifications for new blog posts on twitter and may port my Facebook status to twitter at some point in the future.

Yes, that has been done by many of us experiencing these calls. But it continues. *sigh* Mine seem to have slowed down now that I took several hours and pulled all the known origination numbers from the web reports of others and added the ones I’d seen on my own caller ID and blocked those on my number.

I just resent the need to spend my time in that manner — to avoid phone calls from people I don’t want to call me. I’ve also set up ring-to rules so that after business hours, only certain numbers make it through to my cell — the rest are sent straight to voice mail.

I probably should have done that ages ago anyway. 🙂

Some tiny homes in and around Toronto are just beautiful. I love the beaches area which is not only a great location but also it has many tiny homes that have gone through many renovations in the past few years.

I think that it is essential to get away from everything (yes, even your kids) for a while and enjoy something solitary that’s just for you. I like to go for walks outside or go on a hike by myself. Sometimes I like to just take a nice, hot bath at home if I can’t get away from the house.

As far as the little things in life, don’t sweat them. If the kids leave a mess in the kitchen, leave it alone. If the husband that was working on the car all day left the garage smelling of gas fumes, forget about it. Is it really worth putting a lot of thought and worry in to? I think the answer is no. We sometimes tend to stress out over things that are not that important – especially if we only had 24 hours to live. I can assure you that I would not care about a messy house or dirty laundry if I had not long to live.

I had a really bad problem with credit collection agencies calling my cell phone at all hours harrassing me. But, they were looking for someone else! I had gotten my number from AT&T and the calls began immediately looking for someone named Louis Chandler. I would call the numbers back tellig them that this was no longer Louis’ number, but they kept harrassing me! Finally, I changed my cell phone number and I no longer receive the annoying phone calls.

What I should have done is report the agencies to the Better Business Bureau; or gotten myself a lawyer.

I feel like OVGuide is an underrated site. People always complain they cannot find what they are looking for on Hulu or Youtube. I am always having that problem too. While Hulu has some cool features its not really worth it to me to spend the time going to the site and never being able to find what I am looking for.

Found this blog whilst googling bat symbolism and found it very informative. I have been fascinated with bats for a couple of years now. It seems like the most memorable events of my life are linked to them in some way. I got my first tattoo, of a bat, a couple of months ago to celebrate this. : )

I love your necklace, it’s very beautiful. I’m still trying to find out why I adore these creatures so much as nothing seems to have ‘clicked’ yet, but I intend to keep looking!

I’ve loved bats for most of my life always wondering how people can be scared of these adorable little critters… I treated myself to a bat silhouette on the back of my neck on Saturday. Lots of people think I am mad but I couldn’t give a stuff what they think!

Sad that your post is over a year old and most of what you have described has not changed since.

MobileMe is the only true “gripe” I have w/ Apple in as long as I can remember. It’s a shame because the concept is great, but the execution is poor and support is abysmal.

My subscription runs out in January and I will not be renewing. I switched to Gmail a few months ago (as a backup) in case my problems w/ MM were prolonged….they were/are, so I switched everything over and haven’t looked back.

It’s sad that a freebie program/solution is not only more reliable, but far/away better too. What a waste of $$$.

Hi! Onenote kept me tied to windows too. On Linux, I use TreeDBnotes 3.xx running in WINE. It runs quite well, and allowed me to move all my OneNote notes into over to linux.

It lacks some of the functions of OneNote, but its really quite good. Other options include using MyBase (very good reputation and functions) in WINE,
TreePadSAFE also runs well in Wine, but it didn’t maintain formatting very well when I tried it last time.

I am feeling your pain… I am the director of IT and addition to supporting people on both Mac and PC platforms, I do some writing myself as well as some coding. I further hate going back and forth trying to find that perfect application for my personal taste at the moment. The quick notes you mention I find in windows Wordpad works well enough and is quick. I use Ubuntu Linux and there is something similar there. The bloat of some apps is crazy these days though. I really do need to read more often here…

I also like OneNote but have just started using it on a tablet PC. It has way more features than I will ever need.

I have found an open source program called LightScreen which will clip, copy and paste to Open Office documents. For me this is about 90 percent of what I need One Note to do.

All I really want is muiltiplatform that will take lightscreen clips and allow tablet PC scribbles.

I also have the Otterbox in White and I luuuuuuuurve the protection.

I get made fun of for it by all my iPhone friends, but I’m a dropper.

So when I ordered the 3GS, I was dead set on getting a hardcore case.

My mom wants a white one & can’t find it, I may have to order the pink for myself and give her my white case.

I’ve dropped my iPhone twice and it held up. My 2 year old & 4 year old both have their own games on it and I’m not too worried.

I stumbled across your blog doing a search for syncing Thunderbird to the iPhone or somesuch and stayed because of your blog descriptor. As a fellow seeker of simplicity, it spoke to me. I’m also on the indy path, chunking through, doing what I can and making the most of it. And 40 in a year. =)

One of the sustainable strategies gaining prominence in my experience has been mind control. Me getting control of my own mind, that is.

Since my response to my life is based on patterns, and the pattern had mostly been me being jerked around by my mind, how do I 1. get control of it? and, 2. get it to support me, i.e. enjoy my life rather than feel anxiety or stress.

For example, I have the tendency to get flooded with minor anxiety first thing in the morning in thinking about everything on the deck for the day. (Turns out that in part it’s probably due to hormonal change levels of (I think) seratonin while sleeping.)

So the first thing I do in the morning is yoga and meditation practice, 20 minutes each. Those have been, by far, the most useful techniques in reigning in my obnoxious mind that I’ve been otherwise ready to amputate at times. At this point, sitting has become more or less my answer to everything. Stressful day, come home and sit. Too heady to write, go sit. PMS, sit. Just 20 minutes to get back to that luscious home base space.

I enjoy your writing style–very easy to read. Thanks for sharing a slice of your life.

I just switched to TB a few days ago and have loved it so far. Until I needed to find an email chain from a month ago. I like how in Outlook you can do a “find all related messages” for one specific email.

Hi there
I had the most bizare bat experience on my way home from work late (like 1am) the other night. I was driving and had was just around the corner from home when there was a gust of wind and, a with a thud, something hit my cars bonnet. I could see that something had landed, but not fallen off the hood of my car so I pulled over to see what it was. It was a dead bat!! I checked and the cute creature was absolutely dead, and not breathing at all. The bat had not died by hitting my car, but rather died and fell out of the sky and landed on my car. I drove carefully home, the bat stayed put until I removed it the next morning, it had an injury on its back, as though maybe an owl had caught, killed and accidently dropped it.
Even stranger is that the exact location of the incident is the same place that about 2 months prior I had also been driving home late and a small buck had stopped me by standing in the road, it would not move. I eventually got out of my car and the buck sauntered back into the bush in the direction it had come!!
What does this all mean?
Because the bat was dead is it the opposite meaning of a sighting of a live one?
It was very freaky!

Yeah, this is a little bulky (but still the BEST protection around). I had this for my first gen iPhone. I had to get a new case for my 3GS and opted for the casemate (still in hot pink for easy finding in dark places — like purses) ID Credit Card Cases. Doesn’t protect the face as well, and not water resistant, but uber cool to just grab my phone and have my drivers license AND my debit card with me.

Good for you! Personally I was lucky enough to be home schooled a few years using Calvert School in the early 80’s while my family was traveling around on a sailboat, and I must say, I rather miss that. Ive discovered they now have a website at http://homeschool.calvertschool.org/ (I’m not affiliated with them in anyway.) Should the day ever come when I have progeny either of my own or to take care of, I will definitely also opt only for home schooling. In the end, a proper, stress free education is the best thing one can give a child – if one has the patience and time for it. For social interaction with other children roughly around my age (which is better than only interacting with children of exactly the same age), I had my bi-weekly Judo classes, Saturday morning German classes, and other group activities. There is no real reason to omit having home schooled children interact with other of their age range – a valuable lesson in itself, how to deal with others.

ok so i have a teacher at Mooresville Intermediate school and she is the most meanest teacher ever and im not just saying that because she is strict. Her name is Mrs.Kelly and she should not be a teachers and its like she can talk to us like crap and we cant say anything back! when we come into recess shes like “oh my gosh what did i tell you guys about Dedoderent and its not like B.O its just sweat after we ran at recess and every thing well she yelling that to ALL the children and we are only 6th graders and ah shes just so mean also she will sit in class and yell at you! well a couple of people were talking in class and she said i dont know who was talking so im taking a merit from everyone ( merit- its like a tally or strike every time we are bad we get one taking away and if we lose 5 in one month we don’t get to go to a merit celabration) but that’s not fair at all! and if you make her mad she has to go tell all of her little teacher buddies or like if your parent writes a note and that makes her look bad or is mad and she is like Come here Now and then she will fuss at you then go tell her friends and ah well also she is for me every time i am late i have to hand in a note and i went up to office and they haven’t gotten any of them so now i think she hasn’t been turning them in and she just doesn’t want to look bad and all! well that why my teacher is the WORST teacher ever! i hate her

Need help with iphone calendars, MobileMe calendars and Thunderbird/Lightning calendars.

I want the same calendar info to appear in all 3 places and to update not matter which one I enter in a new event. Is this possible? If so, could you provide step by step help to enable this.

I have OS 10.5.8 with iCal 3.0.8, MobileMe subscription and iPhone app, GMail account.

I currently cannot sync desktop iCal to MobileMe and have to use the Web verions of MobileMe cal to get the events onto my iPhone.

I know this has to be possible with duplicating events in the calendar and with losing events because they did not sync to all the other calendars.

Mitch, I’d love to help you — but I completely refuse to use MobileMe. I found it to be such a catastrophe when it was first launched that I swore off at that point and have refused to go back. (See the post on MobileMe from 2008). I use Google Apps for email and calendar coordination between my iPhone, my iPad and my MacBook Pro. I also use iWork (still in beta) with a few of my clients to allow collaborative work from the Mac or the iPad. It’s making me a bit MORE flexible and more mobile.

I haven’t battled with Thunderbird/Lightning for a few years now (I love Google Apps!)

I did do a quick search and found a few resources that may help you (or at least co-commiserate with you) with your situation including one from PC world, I also found a blog on the challenges of mobile me and thunderbird, and a MacFixIt selection of fixes and workarounds.

Hopefully one of those will help address your specific situation and combo of softwares to get you up and running.

Between you and me, I made the decision some time ago to create a working environment which is the least possibly complex combination for the most ease of use. It’s a “work in progress” – but the goal is to get my work done without having to fight the tools that are supposed to help me. I do that by eliminating troublemakers and keeping my systems simple (as much as I can). I eventually got tired of spending all my free time rebuilding my systems and troubleshooting. So, if I have a piece of software or service that causes me grief or doesn’t play well with the others– it doesn’t last long. My software and hardware is here to serve ME — I don’t serve them anymore 😉

I would love to help you out with that, but this post is so old… and I don’t use either of these clients anymore. I’ve gone to Google Apps for everything. Love it, BTW — no issues with virus infestation, easy-to-fix spam issues (which are minimal from the beginning) and access from anywhere with a universal update on all devices when I make a change from anywhere. Love it. 🙂

Great bat symbolism info… I too went in search of this creature’s symbolic meaning after finding one who had perished in the seeds of a burdock plant. I was checking to see if the roots and seeds were ready for harvest and noticed first the wing and then saw that it must of gotten stuck in the velcro-like seeds. Although found dead I do still believe it to be a positive message, which I will continue to “investigate”…. thanks for the sharing.

I was looking up the meaning of Laurels because right before my mother in law passed away from a fight with cancer she spent a few weeks coming in and out of a very deep sleep. She was often telling our aunt that the angels were finishing her coat. Once she told our aunt that the coat was being made of laurels. I just thought of that again and wondered if there was any significance to it. I was very surprised to learn in your article that it meant “to cleanse the soul before entering”. Maybe before entering heaven. What a beautiful thought.

I have an iPhone 3G with IOS4.1 software and iTunes version 10 on a MacBook Pro i5. Before iTunes 10, I could see the apps that needed to be updated in iTunes and simply update them and sync. Now there is no way in iTunes to see what apps have to be updated (and I’ve searched hours of support documents and can’t find any help).

I can update apps on my iPhone directly, and then when I connect to iTunes, they’ll sync. The problem is this: A couple apps that I need to update are over 10 megs, so I can’t update them on the phone. And in iTunes 10 I can’t find any options for how to update them there. I have literally searched every menu, and even the Apple support docs, that show pics of how this is done, don’t match what I see when I’m on iTunes.

Does anyone out there know how in the world in iTunes 10 to update your apps? I’m not a novice … this has been super frustrating. None of the help docs match the issue I’m having. BTW, my software is all up to date.

Just try redownloading those exact same apps again. iTunes incorrectly states that it will charge (at first) before producing a pop-up window that states you already own the app and won’t be charged.

As for me, I’ve collected over 10k apps for various reviews and as a result, get about 200 necessary updates a week. When the number of apps requiring updates exceeds about 80, I consistently get errors from iTunes when trying to perform an app update. I suspect it’s because their iTunes app is sending a message entailing all apps. What would be smarter of Apple is if the apps within your library had an icon on them to indicate what needed to be updated. It would also be smarter of Apple to disregard apps that are no longer available in the app store. This snags me every time… I finally get to the list of apps but because one or two rogue apps were removed from the app store, none of them will update with the “update all” button. Shame on the developers and double shame on the testers!

Oh – forgot to mention how to get around this issue … move all your apps out of iTunes into a temporary folder, open iTunes, select all the apps in your library then press delete.

Now add them back in batches by dragging them from the folder into the Apps window. After each batch click the “Updates Available” arrow then update. If asked to overwrite an app, I always select yes. The Apple store update handles making sure the latest app ends up in the library folder anyway.

Angela thanks for reminding me how great I have it here on the farm. Sometimes we get caught up in the drama of life that we forget just how wonderful life is. We have a warm home, great pets, organic cattle, a pantry full of our own organically grown vegetables and plenty of wood for the fire. Sure we sometimes struggle with money issues now and then but all in all we have it really good. Life on the farm is good.
Here’s hoping that we never feel like we are so grown up that a play house is silly! I never want to be that grown up. lol

You know, Doug, I loved my little stint with the Census. Granted, not as much as I enjoyed it 10 years ago (I think being out in the field was more fun for me than being a supervisor, to be honest). I am glad, however, that it’s over. It was hard to run a business and do the Census thing. I met some great people (present company included) and am happy that I did it. However, I doubt very seriously that I’ll be willing to do it again next round. I got some great stories, though — and that’s a good thing. I always thought this would be something I’d do every 10 years… but I think this time fixed me. 😉

I have just taken my canon sd500 apart to repair the lcd display. Didn’t work at first, so I took it apart two more times till I figured out what I did wrong. On the 3rd time apart I decided to take pictures of most steps so at least I could help others that might consider doing the same thing. On the third time I discovered a couple of steps not mentioned in previous tutorials. There is a much easier way to insert the ribbon cable.

Thanks for dropping by, Lorinda! I believe that the best art and “collectibles” are those that we use and enjoy daily. Unfortunately, I can’t bear to see the things I love cracked or broken — so I threw out the superglue and simply take a photo of my favorite things when they are damaged (to keep the memory) and throw out the item. It depresses me to see my favorites damaged. It’s one of my (many) weirdnesses. 😉

I don’t know if we are named (unknowingly) by our parents for the qualities we already possess, or if our name influences who we are — but I do believe that either way, it’s an indication of our “true” selves. Of course, my mother once told me that I was her “little angel” before quipping that it wouldn’t have seemed right to name me her little devil. Go figure.

I had the same problem however my resolution was one of two things.
1) Had a proxy enabled

Thanks, G Storm! Congrats to you and yours! Doesn’t it feel fantastic? I have one tiny bill left and then I’m completely debt free. That should be handled in the next few months and then you will probably hear my “whoop!” all the way to where YOU are. The space that isn’t tiled is access to the crawlspace. I built the cabin with an extra tall crawlspace so I could easily access it to handle any system repairs, maintenance and upgrades. I put in access from the inside so I don’t have to go out in the weather if there is a problem. It’s framed with wood and has wood planks (to match the millwork around the windows, doors and other trim) so it coordinates and is stained dark like the tile. I’m still looking for the perfect flush-style pulls so I can remove the temporary “handle” for access.

I actually drew them all up by hand and haven’t converted them to something more “pretty” – my own escape from the city has been the best decision ever, despite the challenges of country living. 🙂 At this point, I have a house with systems I understand (or can at least ferret out) and have found that simple is better… much, MUCH better.

Pretty cool idea with your cabin and I like the Google Sketch Ups you have done. Will have to check that out in the near future. How is the hot water heater? We had one go out about 2-3 weeks ago here and it was mess – it sprang a leak. All good now, but I would still rather be out in a cabin a bit more away from things.

Ray – The hot water heater is still in limbo. I’m going to have to completely rewire from a 220 connection to a 110, so I need to start with new breakers. 🙁

It will be fixed soon (I hope). I believe one of the keys to living in a tiny space is having a great deal of outdoor freedom. We have 25 acres here and I’d add a few dozen more if I could! The addition of a huge covered porch is also essential, IMHO.

I couldn’t be happier in my space, but I’m looking around now and wondering how much of my “stuff” I can easily eliminate, now that I’m in my final home. That’s the next step!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I agree that there should be some changes, but I think it’s a bigger issue — one with our public “education” system as a whole — rather than merely an isolated issue related only to Toliver.

I, too, wish someone had changed the sign — preferably before they closed the glass on the front of the display and locked it. (I also attended Toliver.)

However, photos capture a moment in time and at that moment, this was what it looked like. That’s why I took the photo. At the very least, I hope that this type of thing won’t happen again. Maybe the administration will be a little more observant and the teachers will encourage students to work on spelling issues a little more.

One can hope. 🙂

Just open the Post Info. menu (gear&pencil) and at the top you will see ‘local’ and ‘published’. Tap on published and it will show you all the stuff you have on your blog. Just tap on the one you want to open and you can edit it.

Blogsy is always saving your data so you shouldn’t have to worry about that. If you want it in the ‘local’ listing then just tap on the plus (+) button.

Well I did it!
That was even after loosing two screws in the carpet, while picking them up in tweezers to put in the holes. I panicked at first, but held my self together, within five minutes, I found each in turn.
Well I think you did a wonderful job, explaining the procedure, it went like clockwork, so thanks a million.
