While I was writing, Alex was exploring and she found a GIANT mushroom.

I’m not a mushroom expert, so I don’t know what type this is, but the sheer size of it impressed us both.

My daughter adores horses. She nearly worships them, so when we went to a riding stable, she was in heaven!

The horse, Sandy, was the highlight of Alex’s trip out west. She’s decided she wants to be both a cowgirl AND a veterinarian when she grows up now (and, of course, a writer like Mom) and she wants to do it all from her own farm or ranch. That’s the flavor of the day :O)
She can multi-task fairly well, who knows, maybe she can do it all!
Today started out great and ended great. I saw parts of Colorado that made me want to go back home and pack a couple more bags, grab my husband and come to live here permanently!

The views were breathtaking — and not just because the air is so thin and I’m so out of shape. They are beautiful. I saw my first aspen groves, my first mountain streams, dozens of beaver dams, assorted wildlife and a dazzling array of wildflowers. Continue reading
The next morning after we had breakfast, the men went in search of a welder. Alex went swimming in the pool and I hauled her out when her bravery outpaced her new swimming skills in water that was a bit over her head.
She didn’t freak out once I grabbed her and drug her back to the side. She even continued swimming for awhile, albeit in the shallow end thereafter. I hope that she’s now safely past both the screaming fear of the water and the overblown confidence phases of learning to swim. Continue reading
While sitting on the couch on Sunday, discussing the trip with my father and my uncle, I learned that my uncle was not merely taking luggage… he was taking everything imaginable… literally everything BUT the kitchen sink.
Alex was taking a small backpack (one big enough for her clothes and belongings, but small enough that she could carry it herself on the way back home, when we hop a bus) and I was taking a medium sized backpack (my clothes are bigger).
My father was concerned about the weight being towed, so Alex and I kept it light. Truth be told, I’d have packed in a backpack for each of us anyway. I’ve traveled for a week long business trip in a carry on and have done just fine, this was a breeze.
So, while we were packing light, my uncle Dennis was taking his fishing poles, his guns, his tackle boxes, his bows and arrows, and his 4-wheeler (which would be towed behind the 5th wheel on it’s own trailer). So already we are beginning to look like a wagon-train. Kinda fitting, I guess, after all, we are headed west. :O) Continue reading
