Twilight sells out (even in Russell Springs, Kentucky)

11/22/2008 9:13:00 PM

I took my daughter and our friend, Brittney to see Twilight last night, to a sellout crowd in Russell Springs, Kentucky. Sellout. That’s really saying something around here. It almost never happens. The 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. showings were overrun with enthusiastic crowds.

And, just in case no one believes a sell-out crowd around here, I have photos!

Great movie… the book, of course, was still better. ;O)

Brent Lengal and Mary Beth Warner pose with Alex following their roles as John Proctor and Abigail Williams in the Russell County Production of Arthur Miller's Play "The Crucible"

Alex and I saw a wonderful production of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” this afternoon. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. This was Alex’s first community production experience, and I must say she was enthralled.

Russell County’s own Brent Lengal and Mary Beth Warner (playing John Proctor and Abigail Williams) offered to pose for a photo with Alexzandria following the show. (She was thrilled.)

The next event will be the telling of ghost stories on October 23rd.

For more information, you can visit the Star Theatre online or visit in person at: 546 Main Street, Russell Springs, KY 42642 in Russell County, Kentucky.

High-Tech Theft: KY Governor Seizes Domain Names

Kentucky Governor, Steve Beshear --gives orders to swipe domain names

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear’s Office recently seized 141 domain names belonging to Internet gambling sites. Those names have been transferred, by court order, to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The DNS information was ordered to stay the same while the court case was being resolved.

There was an outcry this week in a Press Release I received this week by Jim Waters of BIPPS — the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions:

High-tech hijacking: Web site domain names seized, Internet freedom threatened

(Frankfort, Kentucky) – The Commonwealth of Kentucky has taken unprecedented legal action by seizing more than 140 Web site domain names belonging to online gambling sites.

Due to the dangerous and far-reaching implications of this high-tech hijacking, the Bluegrass Institute will hold an emergency summit in Frankfort on Monday, Oct. 6. Timing is critical as the next legal hearing on this issue takes place the following morning, Oct. 7, before the Franklin County Circuit Court.

The Bluegrass Institute urges anyone with an interest in protecting Internet freedom to join us in protest against this egregious action. While the primary focus in this legal matter is online poker, the ramifications extend much farther into the entire realm of online commerce.

This radical approach is disturbing for many reasons. Chief among them is the concept that domain names of Internet sites operating legally in their home nations can be seized by other nations for violation of local laws. This should be of concern to all Americans. If Kentucky is successful, a very dangerous precedent will be set.

The Bluegrass Institute will be joined by several other groups who stand in opposition to Kentucky’s actions. They include the Internet Commerce Association; Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association; Americans for Tax Reform; The Poker Players Alliance and many others who continue to join with this cause.

We will convene a panel discussion on a range of topics requiring immediate action. The meeting is open to the public and all participants will be available for media comment.

The summit will take place at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Frankfort (405 Wilkinson Blvd, Frankfort, KY 40601) at 1 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, Oct. 6. Please RSVP to Jim Waters of the Bluegrass Institute at 270-782-2140 or jwaters@bipps.org.

The court, on October 7th, decided to rule on the case next week, on October 15th. I anxiously await this historic ruling. I can only hope that (as a small Internet business entrepreneur), that my state fails miserably to make this action stick. I’m honestly appalled that they would even try. What a month to be a Kentuckian!

Wicked Turns Five

10/31/2007 10:23:00 PM

Purple birthday cake for Wicked Word Craft
Today marks the fifth birthday for WickedWordCraft.com. In honor of this landmark, I’ve given WWC a much-needed facelift. I’m also now running on the WordPress platform. It looks a bit cleaner and fresher. I’ve also imported my background from WickedBlog.com to have a bit of continuity between the two sites.

I’ll be tweaking and adjusting things over the next few days (maybe even weeks), but the look should stay mostly stable now. If you have any suggestions or comments, I’d love to hear them. Thanks for stopping by!

Angela

Treo Selected as Best Convergence "All-In-One" Device by Users

11/22/2005 11:01:00 AM

An independent research group recently conducted a comparative use study on the Treo 650, the Samsung i730, the UTStarcom PPC6600 and Blackberry 7100.

And the size, design and useability of the Treo device came out ahead of the pack, with the Samsung i730 being second…

It makes me wonder how long the Treo can keep the edge. I love my own little device, but unless Palm continues to keep stride, I’m sure they can’t keep the lead in a market as competitive as this one is becoming.

I had a reader write me this week to ask my why I wrote about the Treo 650, why I didn’t pick the HP device instead, since it had a larger screen, etc. (more…)

Happy Halloween!

10/31/2005 12:05:00 AM

Hi there! I’m Winifred, the resident word witch here at WickedWordCraft.com! I keep an eye on things while Angela is working and when she’s away from her computer. In celebration of the third anniversary of Wicked WordCraft, Angela and I have brewed up a special treat for you…

The Wicked Quote Cauldron!

Now, to be able to see and play with the Cauldron, you will need to download Flash 8.0 or higher. So do that before you click over to see the Wicked Quote Cauldron.

The Wicked Quote Cauldron was Angela’s brainchild. She wanted to find a way to return the “popping” bubbles that were so popular with visitors of the earlier incarnation of the site and she wanted to share some of her favorite quotes with fellow language lovers and quote collectors. (more…)

Are you headed to the NAR conference this week? Want to learn a bit more, “hands-on” with a Treo?

You might want to check out the Palm exhibit. According to a news release that landed in my inbox, Palm will be demonstrating the Treo 650 as a Real Estate tool, and will be giving away a Treo 650 to boot.

You have read what I’ve said, but you can’t actually play with a Treo here on WickedTreo.com — maybe at NAR you can give one a test drive.

And, for those of you headed to San Francisco…Have a blast!

Business Blogger Encourages Others to Enjoy Blog Benefits

09/19/2005 8:51:00 AM

(Dunnville, KY – August 31, 2005) Many business owners hesitate to blog because they feel they aren’t ‘good writers’ or they don’t want to ‘open up’ to the world. Marketing consultant, Angela Allen of WickedWordCraft.com, encourages website owners to utilize the blog format to share their knowledge in a blog. Why? Because it works. Angela L Allen, of www.WickedWordCraft.com , is a writer and Internet marketing consultant who encourages her clients to communicate and keep a constant content flow on their websites to attract visitors. “Keeping content fresh and interesting keeps people coming back,” explains Allen. She discovered how this approach works for her own business when, on a whim, she added a blog to “play around” on the backend of her business site.

She discovered how effective it could be for business when WickedBlog, her personal and marketing blog, started getting more hits than the other sections of her business site. “The popularity of WickedBlog over the past few months encouraged me move the blog to it’s own domain,” said Allen. WickedBlog was introduced as an unadvertised “backend” feature of WickedWordcraft in 2003, although it contained archives from a previous personal blog dating back to 2000. Later, Allen added a link to the blog from the index page, but says it was being ‘Googled’ before it was linked to the main page.

The popularity of the site encouraged Allen to launch www.WickedBlog.com as an independent site last month on a separate hosting account. “I never thought I’d get ‘fan mail’ for a blog,” said Allen, “but it happens quite a bit these days. And the blog format lets me do what I enjoy most – write. It provides an informal format that invites me to share information on a variety of topics on a regular basis.”

This original WickedBlog was recently joined by sister-site www.WickedTreo.com, a specialized blog dedicated to helping real estate agents, consultants, entrepreneurs and writers use the Palm Treo 650 to manage their mobile careers.

Allen uses GeekLog, an open source weblog system to power both blogs. “Geeklog is a great format. This system lets me write live online from my office or on the road using my Treo. The blog helps keep me connected and expressive,” said Allen, who admits she’s kept journals since the age of seven.

“Many of my clients hesitate to blog because they feel they aren’t ‘good writers’ or they don’t want to ‘open up’ to the world,” said Allen. “I urge them to utilize the blog format to share their passion for their business and encourage them to be confident enough to show their more ‘personal’ side. Why? Because I know it works.”

Allen says potential clients usually contact her after reading one of her articles, a few blogs entries, or being referred personally by another client. She says these clients express that they feel comfortable working with her because they already feel that they know her. “In a service industry like mine,” said Allen “that’s a serious advantage over the competition.”

Angela L. Allen is a writer, Internet marketing consultant and consummate technology hobbyist/geek. She has published articles in print media, online and writes monthly columns for the real estate industry, agents and brokers in ePOWER! News. WickedWordCraft.com is located on a rural farm in the beautiful backwoods of Dunnville, KY, 42528 and serves clients across the globe.

Why did I start Wicked WordCraft?

09/1/2005 3:30:00 PM

As I prepare to launch the new “makeover” of WickedWordCraft, I notice how much “sleeker” the new site feels, how it’s less “fluffy” around the edges. It’s less “cute” and I feel a bit nostalgic about the beginnings of Wicked and why I took this path, several years ago. And, I notice all that’s changed for me, for my business and for the Internet since I did.

Like the recent “facelift” here at WWC, the Internet is an example of “new school” over the traditional advertising and print media models that we all know. The Internet is a complex, organic media and it requires a complete rethinking of traditional concepts of marketing. What worked a few years ago — a photo and text printed on the traditional printed page, doesn’t work now. Effective modern modes of marketing require more fluid, dynamic and interactive approaches to communication. (more…)
