Found! Yet another great online distraction
Best of Craigslist - amusing, but seldom rated “G” — it’s a wonderful place to waste some of your life and get a few chuckles (or nod in silent knowing — depending on your own life experiences.)
It’s all a matter of perspective

I love it!
Amazon Buys J.K. Rowling Book For $4 Million
Yeah, it’s a fortune, but it’s also amazingly cool. I’d love to have a book half this amazing. (And you would too — admit it!)
I’ve rekindled my love of fine books lately and have been drooling over a number of leather-bound editions online, which is how I found out about this.
Want to learn more about it yourself? Want to see the leather-bound edition with silver and gem skull relief on the cover? Want to drool over the fact that only seven exist in the world and that Rowling herself hand-wrote the text? Yeah, I thought so.
How much are you willing to sacrifice for your dream?
Ironically, after contemplating the cost of my decisions up to this point in my life today… I saw this video of a little guy willing to give anything for his dream.
(Today, my baby turned 10 years old, so I am a bit melancholy and feeling a bit older than usual. It’s one of those “I’m-old-and-I’ve-not-accomplished-enough” days.)
The video was too cute not to watch, and so sad it brought tears to my eyes. (Sometimes I think we pay too dearly for our dreams.)

Nobel or stupid? Hard to say, isn’t it? Check it out for yourself.

Countdown to a New (and better) Year!
Fantastic Friday Finds: Amusements
It’s been many weeks since I’ve shared any Friday finds. I’d like to remedy that now. I’ve taken some of the “down” time this week to catch up on what’s going on around the web. Granted, I’ve allowed myself to lag behind a bit in recent months, but I’m back!
Today, I’m sharing a few entertainment finds across the web. (more…)
My picks: Universal Declaration of Human Rights
I’ve read through the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights recently, and would like to share a few of my favorites with you here. (more…)
My Internet addiction and related desires
At this point, I’m actually looking forward to renting an office and NOT having the Internet at home for a few months. I want to know how it feels to NOT be able to run and look up whatever flits across my mind at any time of the day or night. I have no self-control when it comes to learning. I will get up out of a dead slumber to run downstairs and look up something if it occurs to me in the middle of the night.
I’m spoiled.
I want to know the answer NOW to any question I have. I’m a ‘net baby. I need to break the habit. It needs to be more purposeful and less automatic. I need to read more and search online less — at least while I’m at home. (more…)
Amazon’s Kindle: Cool, pricy concept for ebooks
I just tripped across the latest in a series of ebook reader devices. This Kindle ebook reader from Amazon seems to be a bit more thoughtfully designed than previous incarnations from other manufacturers. For instance, I like the wireless (and free) access to download ebooks and periodicals, to look up things in the Oxford English Dictionary online, and to view the world of Wikipedia without cell phone charges from any location. (more…)
Saw Beowulf tonight — in 3D!
Ok, the poem that launched my major in English (alongside Chaucer, Milton, and of course Shakespeare) made it to the big screen in a release tonight that I found quite amazing. The digital animation was simply wonderful and to have it “jumping out” at me in full-color, big screen 3D was quite an experience.
A bit on the gory side and a little less than a completely accurate rendition of the original epic hero poem, it was still a good way to spend a Friday evening. An excellent way, in fact.
I’m sure the standard version was good too, but I don’t think anything can quite beat the 3D effects on this one. Kids loved it, I loved it, and it was nearly sold out — so others were anticipating a good time too.
If you get a chance to check it out… you should!
Safety info on grease fires from my mother
Mom sent me this information today (via email) and it was pretty interesting. I knew not to put water on grease in a kitchen fire, but I didn’t realize the full impact of why until I watched this video on fire safety in the kitchen.
How my son spent Halloween: Coheed and Cambria
My son, Nicholas, just sent me a few pics from his night at the Coheed and Cambria concert at the House of Blues in Cleveland, OH. He’s a HUGE fan and was pretty excited about the performance.
After my youngest son’s concert earlier this year, only the 9-year-old hasn’t seen a band in concert and she complains about this loudly.
My daughter, the Indian princess
Alexzandria wanted to be an Indian this year. As a rule, she elects to be Dorothy (from the Wizard of OZ) or a witch (dunno WHERE she gets that concept). This year, she wanted to be an American Native American. And, she looked like a princess. I am sharing a couple of photos here before the make-up and without the hand-woven basket, but you can still get the idea: (more…)
Technology Woes: Going from Windows to Linux
Ok, I’ve been trying to sail without a tailwind of late. So much to do, but so many things that I try to do require me to go and do three other things first. For instance, when my Windows OS died, I figured this was a great opportunity for me to begin learning about Linux.
When I got a system up and running, I was amazed at how easy it was. I have 80% of my mission critical stuff working on Linux now. But that 20% that isn’t working is about to drive me batty. (more…)
In Praise of Chocolate
Ok, I don’t usually praise chocolate… at least not in public. I usually praise it quietly, at home, when no one is looking. After all, everyone knows that chocolate eaten alone doesn’t contain any calories — so that’s how I prefer to ingest mine. My love affair with chocolate is a private thing. Until recently… (more…)
Craigslist.org Advertising REALLY Works!
According to a May article in the Seattle Times, a woman’s house was completely stripped when her niece posted an ad in the online classifieds stating that the house was being demolished and everything in it was up for grabs. (more…)
Slick Saturday Sites: eBooks for Everyone
I love ebooks. I like the idea of having a literal library in my pocket. I’ve been collecting them for years, and I found a great new free ebook site, while trying to figure out how to best view ebooks on my iPhone, which prompted me to share this one and a few others I use.
If you want great eBook content, check out these sites. And once I find a method to actually read ebooks, without the struggles and pain of the half-baked ideas I’ve seen online so far, I’ll let you know. (If I could name the one thing that the iPhone really lacks on the entertainment-in-your-pocket category, it would be a way to read books.)
Anti-Microsoft Videos - Too Funny!
Ok, I’m going to screw up my beautifully optimized, totally validated index page content to share the following with you. (BTW… if anyone has found a way to embed YouTube videos without frying the code for validation… can you please let me know how you did it?)
I’m not saying I love Apple… I do love my iPhone and iPods, however. And I like the multi-touch Surface technology, although I’m not fond of MicroSoft. With that said, these videos made me smile.

Five Fantastic Friday Finds
Like the Slick Saturday Sites, this will be a semi-regular entry on Fridays to sum up the wonderful things I’ve found on the web. I may run these thematically in the future as well, because I usually find really cool things of a similar type when researching a particular topic.
But I must admit that some of the BEST finds are totally serendipitous — so you may get them in that unrelated “wow” format just as I find them. I don’t promise to be orderly, merely to bring you some of the coolness that has rocked my world.
This will provide me a platform so I don’t feel the need to stop what I’m doing and write an entire post about each item. I can grab the basic information and file it for Friday’s post and keep on working! (more…)
