Making Connections: 3 Golden Rules of Social Media

08/31/2007 11:50:00 AM

Social mediaWith the constant droning buzz about social media and Internet communities, it can be pretty overwhelming to determine where you should spend your limited time and even more limited energy.

If you are considering joining some now, you should:

Select only a few - it’s better to do a few things really well than to “sort of” do many things. Choose carefully based on your interests, the others involved whether or not the layout/setup makes it easy for you.

Participate – social media doesn’t work if you don’t work it. Signing up and staying quiet is like going to a dance and propping up a wall all night. It’s no fun and it doesn’t help you become more visible to your potentials.

Advertise – if you are a member of a social network and you don’t tell anyone — how will you be found? Many of the people you already know (or those who know you) may be interested in becoming involved with you on a social network — if they know which ones you use… (more…)

Crafting Content for the iPhone

08/30/2007 7:00:00 AM

img_5013.JPGI’ve been reading quite a bit lately about how to make sure websites are mobile-friendly and, in particular, how to make them iPhone friendly.

Sure, there are lots of mobile devices out there (and I’ve owned quite a few myself) but none have the kind of market saturation that is expected for the iPhone. So, as a website owner, I’m interested in how to make my sites more iPhone friendly and will encourage my clients to do the same for their sites.

If you want to read more on this topic for your own site, consider the following resources: (more…)

Mommy Wisdom Strikes Again

08/28/2007 3:30:00 PM

Apple Cider press AntiqueWhen I was in high school and college, my mother would preach at me. Do this, don’t do that. Ladies do this, nere-do-wells do that. She was a typical southern mother, in my best estimation. She wanted what was best for me.

Once I was no longer available for her daily “consults” on my choices, behaviors and a myriad of other topics she felt I needed to consider, she would send me newspaper clippings in the mail. (more…)

SugarGlider Babies Out of Pouch!

08/27/2007 12:59:00 PM

Tiny Joey crawls back into Sugar Glider pouchMy sugar glider, Trinity, now has two new babies that just ventured out of the pouch this weekend. I’ve not handled the babies, so I don’t know if we have baby girls or baby boys yet.

What I do know is that I now officially have TOO MANY sugar gliders. I’ve decided to sell all the sugar glider babies that are old enough and keep only the original gliders — but keeping the boy and the two girls apart! (At least until the reproduction fairy can visit someone else for awhile!) (more…)

Craigslist.org Advertising REALLY Works!

08/26/2007 6:01:00 AM

According to a May article in the Seattle Times, a woman’s house was completely stripped when her niece posted an ad in the online classifieds stating that the house was being demolished and everything in it was up for grabs. (more…)

Slick Saturday Sites: eBooks for Everyone

08/25/2007 6:53:00 AM

Slick Saturday Sites Logo By WickedBlog.comI love ebooks. I like the idea of having a literal library in my pocket. I’ve been collecting them for years, and I found a great new free ebook site, while trying to figure out how to best view ebooks on my iPhone, which prompted me to share this one and a few others I use.

If you want great eBook content, check out these sites. And once I find a method to actually read ebooks, without the struggles and pain of the half-baked ideas I’ve seen online so far, I’ll let you know. (If I could name the one thing that the iPhone really lacks on the entertainment-in-your-pocket category, it would be a way to read books.)

An eBooks for iPhone Website

08/24/2007 1:45:00 PM

This site not only lets you read books on the iPhone (optimized for the iPhone, I might add and viewable only FROM an iPhone), but it also lets you upload your own books to this online format. Worth a look: http://textoniphone.com

Anti-Microsoft Videos – Too Funny!

08/24/2007 8:45:00 AM

Ok, I’m going to screw up my beautifully optimized, totally validated index page content to share the following with you. (BTW… if anyone has found a way to embed YouTube videos without frying the code for validation… can you please let me know how you did it?)

I’m not saying I love Apple… I do love my iPhone and iPods, however. And I like the multi-touch Surface technology, although I’m not fond of MicroSoft. With that said, these videos made me smile.

Five Fantastic Friday Finds

08/24/2007 7:18:00 AM

WickedBlog’s Fantastic Friday Finds LogoLike the Slick Saturday Sites, this will be a semi-regular entry on Fridays to sum up the wonderful things I’ve found on the web. I may run these thematically in the future as well, because I usually find really cool things of a similar type when researching a particular topic.

But I must admit that some of the BEST finds are totally serendipitous — so you may get them in that unrelated “wow” format just as I find them. I don’t promise to be orderly, merely to bring you some of the coolness that has rocked my world.

This will provide me a platform so I don’t feel the need to stop what I’m doing and write an entire post about each item. I can grab the basic information and file it for Friday’s post and keep on working! (more…)

Writing Can Be As Easy as ABC

08/23/2007 7:17:00 PM

Writing good quality web content is the key to natural, cost-effective, organic search optimization. You know it. You know you need to do it. But you would prefer a root canal… without “happy gas” or anesthesia.

Honestly!

The article or blog won’t write itself. So you try. Scowl-faced and miserable, you SIT there. You stare at the blank page of your word processing program. You decide you are hungry. Thirsty. Need to potty. Need to check your email… forgot to feed the dog/cat/children.

STOP! Writing doesn’t need to be scary and it shouldn’t be your most dreaded task. You just need a little inspiration and a few tips.

Always Prepare Yourself

Like all things, writing skill improves with practice — and that requires getting started.

You don’t want to begin with strikes against you, so you should make sure you are physically comfortable. Don’t wait until you are already tired. Begin when you are well-fed, with and empty bladder and a beverage in arm’s reach. Pick your most creative time – whatever particular time of the day when you are usually most productive.

BEWARE: Don’t get so busy “preparing” that you never actually start. Give yourself a time limit to “settle-in” and begin writing.

Begin with what matters to you

It’s much easier to write compelling copy when your topic interests you. If you know you need to write regularly, keep a notepad or folder (digital or paper) with URLs/thoughts/topics/photos/video clips – anything that you have found interesting in recent days.

Doing this means you will have a storehouse of interesting blog or article fodder at all times. If you are feeling creative, you can even write these items on small cards and drop them into a “topic bank” or a plain jar on your desk.

When it is time to write a blog, you can pull out three cards and pick the one that intrigues you most. You now have a topic!

BEWARE: Procrastination pitfalls are everywhere! Don’t become so busy reviewing all the cards that you never begin writing. Don’t “surf the net” for some ideas – it will take you down rabbit holes that will leave you without a paragraph written and without any time left to write.

Control your research time

Once you have a topic, you may be able to write the entire piece in one sitting… be it a blog or an article. Remember, however, that quality links and a bit of little-known foundational information will make your writing stronger and more useful to your readers. But unless you are a walking wikipedia, you will probably need to do a little research.

BEWARE: Avoid casually surfing the web for the answers you need when researching your topic. Instead, you should diligently seek them out. Be on a mission. Set a time limit for this discovery process and stick to it.

Come out with three good, solid points to set up the structure for any article. Any less and you won’t adequately cover the topic, any more and you may meander.

You may want to implement a list-format article/blog if you are at a loss for more comprehensive copy.

  • Consider using the “Top 5” items or “Top Ten Tips” approach to flesh out the topic
  • Offer a list of resources related to your topic with a synopsis of each
  • Brainstorm about your topic, make a list, and organize your thoughts
  • Consider mind-mapping if you respond well to visual organization techniques
  • Overshoot the number of items you want, and cull for the best of the bunch

Discard those that don’t “fit” with the article or blog you are writing … or add them to your blog fodder jar for next time.

After you have written your piece, read it aloud to check for “flow” and double check spelling and grammar.

Now send it to a trusted colleague or friend for critical review. Make sure you ask someone who will offer an honest critique and some suggestions for improvement. Make the changes you feel are valid and post it to the web.

Finally, take a deep breath, pat yourself on the back and push away from the desk for a few minutes. Relish the fact that you finished your writing task!

eBooks on the iPhone?

08/23/2007 11:04:00 AM

Yup! It’s being done. And there are new, more creative ways to get your ebooks all the time. I’ve been following some of the methods, but most leave you with tiny, ugly notepad typestyles.

Then I found this particular ebooks for iphone video, which gives a great overview of using the PDF download functionality alongside Safari to have a fully illustrated and scaleable ebook on the iphone. Not sloppy! (more…)

Want an iPhone Discount? You Still Have to Pay

08/23/2007 10:31:00 AM

ben.jpg

If you are salivating over the thought of an iPhone and would welcome a discount, you may want to consider a “refurbished” model.

Why? Well, it costs $100 less from the start (for either the 4 gig or the 8 gig model), you can still get the extended warranty (if desired), and you don’t have to sell your soul to AT&T for two years to get a working iPhone. Actually, after trading emails with a manager at AT&T you still DO have to sell your soul and accept that two year contract.

From an email with that manager, delivered this morning: (more…)

WordPress Wednesday: Sepia Paper Themes

08/22/2007 8:09:00 AM

WordPress Logo - For WordPress Wednesday Feature BlogsWhen I first began looking for a way to represent WickedWordCraft.com, I really wanted a paper-look to match my quill.

Since that time, I’ve gone a bit more “high tech” with my look to appeal to my ideal clients (high tech real estate agents and brokers), but I’ve found a few excellent WordPress themes with an old-fashioned paper theme that I wanted to share this week.

Some are scrolls, some are smooth, some are scorched. All are beautiful. (more…)

A Serious Caffeine Addiction

08/21/2007 6:09:00 AM

picture-001.jpgI’m an addict, I admit it. And, until last night, I’d been off caffeine for nearly two weeks. Then, while picking up a new computer mouse to replace the one I’ve killed, I saw Bawls brand caffeinated candies.

I love Bawls soda. It’s like a all-over body rush. So, I had to buy the candies in addition to my new mouse.

After I checked out, I saw a whole pyramid of CASES of Bawls soda. Now, these sodas are seriously expensive, so I controlled myself. But apparently others don’t exert such amazing self-control.

My Sister-In-Law’s New Manicure

08/20/2007 8:23:00 PM

Yep, this one is a real photo, brought to you by the wonders of cell-phone cameras in emergency rooms. (Click “read more” to see it, so I don’t offend casual readers.) My brother-in-law, sensitive man that he is, sent this over tonight with the headline “*Sister-In-Law’s Name*’s New Manicure.”

Apparently, from the third-hand story I got, they were shooting a 50 caliber revolver… I didn’t even know those existed. I was always overly impressed with my .357! But, alas, they do exist. And, as proven by this photo, they aren’t safe. When she fired, apparently part of the blast came out the side and took off the end of her thumb. (more…)

Seven is Supposed to be Lucky?!?

08/20/2007 1:50:00 PM

Lucky number 7Ok, so here it is, the “lucky” year, 2007. And I must admit, my usual sunny persona aside (more like temporarily — and brutally — stuffed in a closet), this year sucks. It just does.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a year that was worse, personally, and I’ve had some doozies. Sounds dramatic, I know. I’m not into the drama scene — but it keeps finding me lately.

I’ve noticed that I’m not alone. So many people I know are having a lousy year and, in this particular case, misery definitely does NOT love company. (more…)

Where Pen, Paper and ‘Puters Play Nice

08/19/2007 8:42:00 AM

I’ve always had difficulty with my two polar opposite sides — the side that loves a good pen and quality paper, and the other side that adores all things techie. The only thing that marries the two in me is sharing the same goal: Effective Communication.

Now, I find a new (upcoming) product called LiveScribe that just may be the answer. It may be just another jaunt down a technology rabbit hole, but it appears to have promise.

It not only records your writing, but also the audio of the situation. Sounds perfect for conferences, college classes and the like — IF the audio is high enough quality and the memory space is enough that the pen doesn’t fall into “overflow” shutdown at a critical moment.

Personally, I’m quite interested in learning more about this new product on the horizon (due to be released Q4 of this year). The only problem? It won’t use my beautiful fountain pen to do the writing and that’s a shame!
